Home Made Bread..What To Do?

I made a couple of loaves of white bread for Sunday brunch...Frankly, I've made better! The flavor was sweet and good, but the texture was a little crumbly. The plan was to make French toast, but everybody just wanted fresh bread. I have one loaf left, and plan to try and make a bread pudding out of it! I have never made this, but appears to be easy and tasty..
I'll be cooking a pork roast today in the slow cooker. It doesn't heat up the house, and left overs make a good pork BB-Q sandwich. I'll be doing pork ribs for the 4th, so I need to make some sauce anyway! We have been eating lighter the last few days, as warm weather tends to do that to people...

Heff- I've been going to friend's house at a lake on 4th for 20 years..If I didn't bring ribs and fireworks they wouldn't know it's me!

I make a granary loaf every day for lunch - in the breadmaker - but it is delicious. :)

Ake- My bread maker died, so I make it from a Kitchen-Aid mixer..
Mona- Tasted great, but texture needed work!
Brian- Looks easy enough to do...

That looks delicious! I had a breadmaker for a while, but we just didn't use it enough to justify the space it took up. That was some yummy bread, though!

Steph- Glad to see you alive! I prefer the mix and bake now- no goofy looking hole in it!
Gloria- Baking is not my first love.. but I try to make edible baked goods!
John- Sounds like a fun day!

I just made pulled pork bbq the other day too. That's always good!

I've never tried bread pudding. I'm intrigued though!

BlueV- I looked up a couple of recipes on the dessert, and it looked pretty easy...

making bread makes no sense to me here in NYC - I have done it but there are far too many excellent bakeries around to even bother - ribs sound good - maybe its time for my banana leaf wrapped ribs of delight.

DogB- You have many things we don't.. I don't bake bread unless threatened!

Nothing better than homemade bread! Hope you post your 4th of July ribs and sauce!

Buffalo,

From the picture and your description it may be that the yeast was not fresh enough and you did not knead the bread enough. Also heat and humidity play havoc with bread baking.. just like us! The bread pudding idea sounds great. Sometimes I just crumble up leftover bread, freeze and use it when I need bread crumbs... never waste!

buffalodick said...

Katherine- I will!
Good Cook- I misread the recipe- cooked at 300F instead of 350F.. bone head mistake.. I am not the best baker..

I've only done bread pudding in the oven, so you might want to think that one over a little, Buff. It is really easy, just a custard blend poured over the bread. I recommend a touch of vanilla, raisins and cinnamon for flavoring. Enjoy!

Marjie- Just about what I was going to do! Makes sense!

oh yeah - ditto on what marjie said...

Even if your oven temp was off, it looks like a nice loaf of bread to me! Nothing better than hot bread and butter.

Everyone loves home made bread! I was watching the Two Fat Ladies last night (couple of gals from the UK now on Cooking channel) and one of them hollowed out a loaf like this from one end and stuffed it with en entire steak and sauteed mushrooms, sealed it, wrapped it in paper and weighed it down. Sliced up nice later on! I thought it looked delicious! good luck with the bread pud!

DogB- If this works, you will hear about it!
Barb- Looks great, tasted good, wrong texture!
Diva- I will write about it- bad or good!

That loaf looks good, but I really like good chewy french bread... I worked in a bakery for five years, that was a long time ago, but the smell of yeast brings back good memories.

Lea Ann- I have made better!
sage- I like it too, but I am not a baker by choice...I am one by default!

Even if the bread was crumbly, I bet it smelled really good.

I bet your BBQ pork is heavenly!

that looks divine to this carb addict. Hope the bread pudding is super tasty!

It has been hot here, too. Didn't really eat all day. Don't worry about the crockpot - perfect for a hot day. Bread pudding is so easy! You will make forever now.

buffalodick said...

BlondeD- Neither had I...
I.G.- Smelled and tasted good, just a little crumbly for my taste!
carma- Haven't made the pudding yet- maybe today..
Fingers- It sounded easy..we'll see!

Buff...you are the man. Cook and bake too. WOW!!

I love home made bread and bread pudding is wonderful. I usually make a sauce for it or I pull a frozen pack of my strawberry rhubarb sauce out. You can add fresh or frozen berries right to the pudding itself when you are making it. Experiment with what you and your wife like. I think home made whipped cream is a must to top it.

When I was a kid they always added cinnamon and raisins to bread pudding and mixed all of their old bread together for it. White, wheat, rye or what ever they had. No waste in those days. Heck they even pickled watermelon rinds. Not to go on the pudding.

Great looking loaf.

Sounds like your' 4th of July will be fun and delicious. Enjoy.

Mr. Buffalo, the lady in your life is very very lucky! Let me tell you, a man that cooks AND bakes, "ma-done" as we Italians would say. That is amazing! That bread looks so good, oh my!

I bet some bread pudding made with the excess would be yummy. I actually bought a loaf of bread about 3 weeks ago, and since i'm not a big "bread by the slice" eater, it sat in the fridge and is now stale....but perfect bread pudding fodder!

Hats off, BD. I can't bake a decent bread and the elevation in the mountains tends to sabotage my limited skills. Thanks God Costo sells fabulous bakery goods that I can freeze. :P

Ally- She likes most of what I make..
UrbanV- I haven't made it yet, but it sounds easy..
Vick- I'd rather cook than bake, too..
