Pizza Stones, Home Made Sauce, And Pork Pot Roast

Yesterday, I made up a batch of pizza sauce...I like to make my own, as no commercial sauce has the flavor I enjoy! I use tomato sauce, dried oregano, dried basil, garlic and onion powder, dried fennel seeds, red pepper flakes, a bit of sea salt, and a little brown sugar. Simmered for about 1-1/2 hrs., it thickens nicely and melds the flavors to a tasty mix... I won't lie- I didn't make the crust for a change! Because of this, I felt compelled to get out my pizza stone... Mine is well seasoned, and no youngster! I was using up cheeses(Swiss, Havarti, Parmesan, and Cheddar!)chopped onion, ham, along with some pepperoni..I won a pizza class once, and was taught more stuff on the pizza didn't make it better, just harder to get done right! We enjoyed this easy to make pie, and the cheeses were a refreshing change from Mozzarella!
Tonight it's a pork butt pot roast..3lbs. of Boston butt, wrapped in aluminum foil, with cream of mushroom soup, dry brown gravy mix, and spices- all sealed in tightly. 3-1/2hrs. at 315F, will make it tender, and in it's own gravy! Probably a side of white rice, to utilize some of that gravy!

MMM.. I love homemade pizza. And well, you just have to have your own pizza stone, right? All nice and hot so the crust gets just so... I once had an old pizza man tell me provolone cheese was the secret in pizzaria style pizza - about 25% to the mozzarella. Your cheese blend sounds oh so good too!

Have you tried your hand at grilled pizza? Yum.

Heff- You ever passed a stone? I bet you weren't laughing! Once, I had a mystery pain, and went to emergency..they gave me Demerol- which has to be the best drug ever invented! I still hurt, but didn't seem to give a shit...
Good Cook I usually carry Provolone in the house.. comes from mild and soft to hard and aged- the aged is pretty pungent!

I love rice with beef. I'm not a gravy girl, but I have plenty of gravy dudes in my house!

and I don't make my own pizza sauce. Sorry, I'm too lazy.

I love homemade pizza! The sauce looks nice!

Marjie- Wife likes gravy..me, not so much!
Sook- Sauce and crust are key to good pizza! That pork pot roast will be something, believe me! At .99 cents a pound- it's a deal!

You know EVERYTHING you make is so tempting I have to come to your blog after dinner! :)

What is a pizza stone btw?

When you do make pizza crust do you throw them up and flip them around in the air?

buffalodick said...

Uber- A pizza stone is just that..a ceramic board, quite heavy, that you put in the oven and preheat before putting a pizza on it! It's even heat makes a wonderful crust..No, I can't throw a pizza crust like on TV!!

sauce sounds great - I like this 'insta gravy' thing you do - I am going to have to try that sometime - is this in the crock pot or in the oven - will it work in a crock pot - I have a crock pot that I have had for 20 years and I have only used it once...

DogB- If I got my butt moving quicker this morning, I would have wrapped it and put it in one of my crock pots! You can do this roast in either- with different cooking times, but wrap it as described! The steaming effect is the trick of it..

Shame on you for not making the crust--I'll have to admit that I have cheated and used jar sauce, but I always make my own yeasted crust... But best of all is to also make my own sauce and to then make the pizza with lots of onions and peppers and mushrooms...

I just bought a good pizza stone. Dying to try it with pizza - used it for the flatbreads. Love it already.

Been meaning to get a pizza stone....

I've never been successful making a roast in the oven. It's always dry and unappetizing. I have to use a crockpot. Next time I'll try wrapping it like you do.

buffalo,

Why is it that every time I grab a store bought piece o' crap meal from the store--you make the very same thing--- HOMEMADE!!!

LOL_ The Pizza we tried tonight sucked so bad--we couldn't even eat it! I have to go fetch the wrapper out- to make sure we don't get that bland brand again!

I'm breaking out the Pizza Stone, which means we have to move so we can unpack so we can find everything we didn't unpack, when we last moved....damn I'm hungry!

Do you mix the cheeses together before sprinkling, or do you layer them one by one?

Akelamalu said...

I'm not a big pizza fan but the cheeses all sound good. I'm a big cheese fan. :)

Brian- I make enough to freeze, so I only have to make it once in a while..
sage- I normally make my own crust, but I wanted a smaller, crisper pizza than my yeast crust..
Fingers- Before using, season with peanut or olive oil, and leave in 450F heated oven for an hour..
Bama- I'll check it out today..
UrbanV- Handy device for other things than pizza..
Jen- This is a no fail recipe..good for beef pot roast too!
Gloria- Roast came out pretty good, too!
Vick- I have a photo of a finished product, but it was to late to post..
John- Hard to get a good franchise pizza, or a good store bought frozen one..
Mona- I just make sure the go in a mixture that is somewhat uniform..
Ake- It was different and good, with the different cheeses..

Your pizza is looking mighty tasty! I really like to mix cheeses too...do if often.

The old tin foil slo-baking trick is a winner... used to do it all the time. My dad loved it.

Barb- You know all the old Michigan tricks.. This is in half the church cook books in the area!

Ive never heard of a Boston Butt..I have a New York Butt...wrapped in denim...LMAO...but I do love pork butt in the crock pot....that pizza sauce sounds the best...I love the brown sugar idea...Mmmmm...and rice...

buffalodick said...

smArtee- Blade pork roast would be another name..like pork steaks that never got cut into steaks.. I know how to trim denim (he leered!)..

UBERMOUTH said...

Oh, LOL I thought you pummelled the dough wih a rock or something[for real]. Are the boards round or square?

Tracie said...

I've always wanted to buy a pizza stone but never got around to it. I'll bet your homemade sauce is better than the jar version by far.

Mike Minzes said...

I only made pizza sauce a couple of times. I even made a white sauce. Fresh pizza sauce is the only way to really enjoy pizza.

buffalodick said...

Uber- Generally square- the bigger, the better!
Tracie- Home made sauce has more quality..the commercial stuff is about half corn syrup..
R.L.M.- Home made anything is usually better..
