Chinese Take-Out Can Be A Good Decision!

Some days I just don't feel like cooking! Tuesday was one of them...A little while back I had asked my commenters what their favorite Asian meal was. A number of people answered General Tso Chicken..Chinese take out sounded good, and I had never tried the Generals chicken- so last night we did! My wife and I split an order of it, and both had an egg roll on the side. The chicken tasted like deep fried chicken, in bite sized pieces, heavy with some kind of BB-Q sauce. It wasn't bad, but I don't feel I got the best version of this dish...It's a good restaurant, and have never had a complaint against them, so maybe I got what I asked for! I'm going to do a little research on it, and find out...
Today, I'll be making a small batch of macaroni salad- any pasta will do, but what I have in the pantry is macaroni! I make it like a guy would- so loaded with other ingredients you have to look for the pasta!

Now you've got me in the mood for Chinese takeout, alas - Heff CAN'T have any.

We've got a Chinese Takeout/Buffet here in town, and for 2 YEARS Donna has gone in there and LOADED UP the styrofoam takeout containers on ALL their fried and boiled shrimp, and I mean to the point that I was embarrassed to be with her ! NO WAY the place could've been profiting from us.

A few weeks ago the curious checkout girl asked Donna to open the container, displaying all their shrimp !

The next thing Heff heard was the girl (with heavy chinese accent & pointing at Donna)...

"YOU NO COME BACK !!!"

Perhaps if I wore a disguise...

Kate- Or Hunan- I like a good bite in the food!
Heff- Too funny! You been here 4 hour- you go home!I used to go to a Chinese lunch buffet with a customer..we were the only customers in the place that weighed less than 250...

when it comes to Chinese I am pretty selective. Black pepper followed by almond and garlic chicken. We have this little chinese place across the street...best I have tasted in my life.

But Tso's is almost at the very end of the list for me :)

I am sure your salad will more than compensate for the bummer :)

Jhonny- It was kind of a non- event for me...I like spicy!

you should really find a different place to get your general tso's chicken!! the sauce is kind of sweet but spicy, sticky, but NOT barbequey in the least! sorry it didn't work out for you because i was one of the votes for it...can't wait to hear about your mac salad. i've made mine the same way for years but i'm always looking for a new way to jazz it up :)

buffalodick said...

sheri- I'll post on it, and include the ingredients! Remember, made by a guy!

I have never had General Tso's chicken either but hear about it all the time. Must be an American thing. The best pasta salad has a lot of other stuff. Looking forward to it.

Marjie said...

The general's should be in small pieces, with a very light coating on it, and a sort of thick sweet and sourish sauce on it. I think you got robbed, Buff. Sorry!

This may not be something you might like, but I get Whole Foods General Tso's 'fake' soy chunks with broccoli and I love it! Not as sweet, and I add like a hot sauce/bbq sauce to it, make rice and brocoli, because there does not have as much. Hubby does not like fried food, or take out so I had to find a replacement. One day I will go out with someone who will share it with me...one day :(

Never had General Tso's chicken, but do like a good old Americanized Chinese take out everyonce in a while. For some reason I couldn't post a comment using wordpress...don't know how this will identify me.

I pretty much think that all Chinese take-out tastes the same. Or at least at the restaurant I go to.

buffalodick said...

Marjie- not so screwed as gypped..
Chef- I think a little depth of flavor could have been achieved..
Chef- A little effort could have made this memorable..
Leeann- Welcome!You might be right!
pam- I would not argue that!

My mother used to make a macaroni salad that had everything but the kitchen sink in it. We loved it.
I always wonder if her pickled beet salad was a Michigan thing or whether she got that from HER mother. Any thoughts? I love that salad too. My kids never did though.

Generals Chicken is a staple of mine!
But every joint makes it different. Some never make it spicy enough, and some cook it too long and the tiny pieces get too hard and chewy.

buffalodick said...

Sook- Some foods are easier to just buy all prepared..
John- It was spur of the moment for us too!
Barb- I was fortunate to have a Dad that hated beets!
T.T.- We don't do it often, but it is nice once in a while!
G-man- You just described what I got! Chicken was tough, and sauce had no spice in it o speak of..

I love a good chinese takeaway.

Tonight we're having homemade Chicken Pesto Tagliatelle. :)

I'm not a fan of the general's chicken, either. If something is supposed to be spicy and it doesn't make my eyes water, I'm disappointed.

buffalodick said...

Ake- I had to read it twice- I thought you were going to have a tailgate party!
jen- It was pretty sweet, and bland..normally this place makes good food...

Carma Sez said...

yeah, I don't like that "guy method" so much. My husband loads it up with onions to the point that I have to try and dig them out

buffalodick said...

Carma- I'll post recipe, and then we'll talk!

I can taste the vinegar mixed in the sweet red sauce in the General Tso's. Some Chinese places see to do better then others do with it. I like it a bit spicy hot. I like a lot of the seasonings and spices in Chinese cooking. I make a few good Chinese dishes but mostly I go out or order in. I don't know much about their cooking style. Maybe I should take a class.

J.J.- I make a mean stir fry, but sweet and sour, egg rolls, and a few other dishes are better ordered out!

I love the General's chicken... but every place I've ever been to serves it differently and it never tastes the same way. Once you find one you like, you have to remember where you found it!

buffalodick said...

Intense- I know you are right! This place is usually excellent...
