Chili Cook-off 2010 For C-Snips...

Saturday started early for us, as we loaded the van with cooking utensils, grill, food, trophies, etc. for our try at the White Chili category in a chili cook-off! We chopped, diced, and mixed a bunch of different food stuff together, making a huge batch at 3 gallons! We were happy with our batch, and liked our chances..
The first photo is of the lady who organized the event, and she had reserved the corner table closest to the bar door for us! This is a great location, which can help when selling the chili to the public.. Second photo is our neighbors at the contest, who really decorated their booth like it was Halloween! The third shot is of our friends Dragon Spit Chili..Between our two teams, we probably have 40-50 chili trophies and it is unusual for neither of us to place in a contest. The last photo is a rare sighting of the semi- mythical Buffalo Dick hisself!
We didn't win. The white chili that won was a good friend of the organizer, who helped put up the awnings and tables- go figure.. Dragon Spit didn't place either..their red chili was great (I had some!) and they had 3/4 of a batch left.
It rained all day, and turn out was light..everyone had chili left but one guy- ME!
Oh well, these events are getting less impartial and more biased towards the locals who patronize the place all year long..

Sorry you didn't win - but chili cookoffs are fun without a prize, right? Don't let the bastards get ya down!

Heff said...

No Chili pix ?!?!?

Oh well, at least now I know what a Buffalo Dick looks like.

Hope you had fun !

hey there "Tex" thats quite the lid you have there! Look at it this way - at least you didnt have to take any chili home - I would love to see what this white chili looks like.

buffalodick said...

Vick- I just wasn't up for it that day..nice weather would have helped!
Heff- It had its moments, but I still have to empty the van of the aftermath..
DogB- Resistol..wore it because of the damn rain! I was happy not to bring any home, that is true failure! People taste testing loved it, and came back for more...

Sarah said...

Too bad. I also would like to see pics of white chili. It is new to me.

Chef E said...

Ha! We get to gander at the mysterious Buff's face, rather than a crotch holding beast :)

I had a white chili in St. Louis for the first time five years ago, and I liked it, but have not made it but once since...

I am with DB, can we see a bowl one day? Need smellavision!

G-Man said...

Hehehehehehe...

Allowing a Pic to be Published?
Such A Scamp!!!

You don't need no Stinking Trophy!

You have 1st place in the hearts of the tasters!!

I was hoping to make it there, but I didn't get back into town until late and just didn't have it in me to run up to Alto--It looks good, don't worry about not getting a trophy. Let me know when other such contests occur--I wouldn't mind trying my hand at it again--but I always bribed the judge with hushpuppies (which I had cooking on my other burner).

Jen said...

Sorry the judges didn't say you won...the public says you did! I made chii myself this weekend and even though I made double this time it's gone already. I doubt mine would win any contests, though.

buffalodick said...

Fingers- I have posted the recipe a couple of times- suprised you haven't seen it!
ChefE- I posted this recipe a while back- and you missed it?
G-man- I thought it would be an event to comment on!
sage- The lesbians were there in force..of course you knew at the Nitehawk it would be that way! Looked like a Melissa Etheridge concert...
Jen- Sounds like a good batch..won't know if you don't get in the contests..try it!

Brian Miller said...

note: next year arrive early to set up tables...lol. dragin spit...now that sounds like my kind of chili as well...sorry it was lop sided against you...that sucks. hope you had fun at least!

buffalodick said...

Brian- My normal friends who cook weren't there..just us and Dragon Spit..and we most likely won't be back..

pam said...

Fooey on those impartial judges. We know you're a winner.

Kate said...

Well, I say the one that goes home without chili is the winner.

Anonymous said...

Looks like it was all well worth it in the end!!

buffalodick said...

Pam- Biggest batch of white chili I ever made, and could have used another gallon..a lot of repeats, and a lot of referrals!
Kate- You're right, but no trophy!
Ruth- It's a good cause, neutering pets at base pricing..better than killing them like the so called "Humane" Society..

Green-Eyed Momster said...

I'm sorry you didn't win. You should celebrate with some Kettle Chips! ;)

I feel like a winner since you posted a picture of yourself! Seeing pictures of bloggy friends always makes my day.

buffalodick said...

Momster- I look like a used catcher's mitt with eyes, but it's me!

Carma Sez said...

We'll I'll be - it's Buffalo Dick in a photo!! I've never done a cook-off but I've participated in a few art shows. I know what you mean about impartiality ;-)

If your chili was the only one that was completely gone - that says a lot - more than a "win"

I want to know if you have a pick up truck to go along with that great hat! If I didn't know any better I'd say you were one of my neighbors. I canNOT believe you didn't win. You know how dearly I love that white chili of yours and therefore I'm taking it personal. :-)

buffalodick said...

carma- If you can dance about half nakked, I can at least show the world my face! The people there knew what shananigans went on with the judging...
Highlander- I wore that hat to keep the rain off! I know you have the recipe- and there is none better!

Just telling it like it is said...

Ohhh how much fun...and I loved the pictures!!Good to see you smiling face!!!

buffalodick said...

Darngirl- A rare moment, with my photo! Next post should be of my pony tail!

BD, your a sight for sore eyes. So glad to finally put a face with the blog.
Sounds bias, but the woman probably wanted to make sure she had help next year! We've been looking for a BBQ cook off............

Oh shame you didn't win, but you had a great day yeah?

Thanks for posting your photo - it's great to put a face to the name. :)

Stacy Uncorked said...

Awwww! Sorry you didn't win - but there's gotta be something to the fact that everyone polished off your chili, right? :)

Lori Stewart Weidert said...

How many years have I been reading this blog and I just now get to put a face with the name? Nice to meet you, finally!

Sorry you didn't win on the chili; it was rigged!

buffalodick said...

Gypsy- I figured it was about time to post a photo...My wife wouldn't let me take hers!
Gloria- It's a lot of work and then not place..
T.T.- Peoples Choice is just a flurry of ballot box stuffing by teams that has the most friends show up...
Jingles- It had its moments.. :)
Ake- After 4 years , I figure I'd better put a photo up!
Stacey- I'd like to think so!
Gnightgirl- Good to hear from you! I was in the right mood for a photo op...

The Blonde Duck said...

It sounds like you were the unoffical chili king anyway, since everyone else had leftovers!

Barbara said...

Well damn. First it rains (and I heard cold) and then you didn't win? Please don't tell me these cook offs are biased. Not fair. I don't want to hear that. You should have won..but I hope you got to the bar first!

buffalodick said...

BlondeD- I appreciate your kind thoughts! The people next to us made less, and still had leftovers!
Barb- I won't deny having a few adult beverages- just to warm up, mind you!

UBERMOUTH said...

It's all so political and corrupt, the chili crowd.

Mike said...

I love chili. I would probably eat until I was sick at a chili cook off!

buffalodick said...

Uber-It can be, and was..
otin- for 5 bucks you can eat as much as you want...

Marjie said...

Way to go, Buff! A great day, indeed!

The Trophy should be judged by what's bez left in da pot!!!

Nuttin' = winning!

Great Post BD!! Great post!

Mike Minzes said...

Sounds like the white chiily bandit sold out! Loser! I hate people who kiss the brown hole to get ahead!

buffalodick said...

Marjie- I still like to win!
John- Thanks, John!
2289- Welcome to the blog!
2254- Welcome to the blog!
R.L.M.- I can't make better chili, but I could use better judging...

pinknest said...

Nice hat!

I don't like white chili nearly as much as red chili. Bah!

Liz Mays said...

I'm sorry you didn't place, but it's still really cool that your chili ran out! It had to be good!

Chef E said...

Ah, my now I remember, that was different from what I have had, I found it! thanks...

Chris said...

Subjective judging can always be a mystery, that is one reason I like when bbq contests include a peoples choice award.

buffalodick said...

Pink- I've won with both, so take your pick!
BlueV- Not to brag, but mine was gone, and I made twice as much as some did- and they had chili left..
ChefE- Good!
Chris- Even that isn't fair..friends stuff the ballot box of their buddy, no matter what it tastes like..

Inspired by eRecipeCards said...

Oh well... I have entered those contests and judged them... They are fun, but only in the long run does the luck of the draw even out... sounds like your track record is good enough

buffalodick said...

Griller- I've won my share, and then some.. but you had to be there...

Unknown said...

The fact that you had no chili left over speaks volumes!

tavolini said...

Regardless of the voting, I think the fact that you were out of chili kind of speaks for itself ;)

Good job to the unspoken winners!

Just telling it like it is said...

That would be great!! can you get the wife in too!!!I'm nosey
