Sunday Night Home Made Pizza- Dad Pizza

Sunday night, we had some old friends over. It was supposed to be Saturday night, but something came up for them, so we lagged it a day! We caught up on our kids(they had four girls, we had two boys)..If you think all your kid troubles go away when they move out- you are wrong! One child of theirs married a nut case nearly 15 yrs. older than her, and is about as useless as tits on a goose..divorced now, she has sole custody of their one child. Guy drove her about half crazy before she got rid of him!
Anyway, I made what we fondly refer to as a Dad pizza for something to eat. Why is it called a Dad pizza? I've been making home made pizza dough, and sauce since my kids were little- and they would always ask "Can we have a Dad pizza tonight?" It's more Chicago style than NYC- but the thickness of the crust is somewhere in between..I let it rise for an hour in the mixing bowl (in a warm spot!) Punch it down and let it rise again spread in the baking sheet for another twenty minutes before topping. Sauce, sprinkled with hand grated Italian Parmesan and Romano(the real stuff!), shredded Mozzarella, Italian bulk sausage, Pepperoni, chopped onions, sliced mushrooms and sprinkled with more shredded Mozzarella(to bind it all a little better!) Baked at 450F for about 15 minutes, then let it set for another 5 minutes before cutting. Feeds 4-5 seriously hungry people...
I'm going to finally try to make that pomegranate BBQ sauce today, with a pork tenderloin for dinner- wish me luck, as last week I made too many mistakes!

You are so right about it not getting easier just 'cause your kids have left home - mainly 'cause you never stop worrying about them!

I'm sure yours tastes SO much better than my crappy roll out dough from the store. It looks great!!!!

Good luck with the tenderloin!

Yeah, we went through that too, except it was my son who got custody. There are some seriously crazy people out there.

Anyway, I can't tell you how long it's been since I had pizza, homemade or not. My kids never seemed to like it all that much (at least rarely asked for it) being much more in the taco frame of mind.
Would have loved to have been there to have a big slice of yours...it looks gooey and delicious!

It would have to be pretty damn big to feed 4 or 5 of my seriously hungry people. My guys can each consume most of a "store bought" large pizza by themselves...and they wonder why I bitch about spending $75 for a meal I don't even like too much!

Ake- Ain't it the truth! My friend has quite a load to carry these days..
BlueV- True yeast dough for pizza can be flavored with dried basil, oregano, red pepper flakes, or garlic powder- adds a new dimension to the crust!
Barb- Our friends cook, but aren't that good at it- they ate most of it!

nice. we make homemade pizza about once a week witht he boys. they have so muh fun making them. i imagine your home made dough probably smokes ours, but...

buffalodick said...

Marjie- It's the size of a normal cookie sheet, and weighs about 3-1/2-4 lbs! Let's say 4-5 adults, or two kids!
Brian- With pizza, chili, hot dogs, tacos, or burgers- it's all up to what the individual likes..If you try to please everyone- no one is happy!

Good luck with the BBQ sauce, I can't wait to see that! Thanks for the warning about kids. I've already told A.J. we should sell the house and buy an RV and visit on our terms - lol

You and your wife need to come to TN for our get together...ya'll will really enjoy it...it's not that long of a drive, plus I bet I could get Chris to grill something for you too!

that is some serious pizza poundage - do you eat it with a fork or a spoon?

I've never made a deep dish style pizza. It looks huge!

buffalodick said...

Katherine- You never know...
DogB- It's in a 12" x 18" pan- enough crust to make 2 12" diameter pizzas! Fork or hands- you pick!

buffalodick said...

Pam- It is! I have a pizza stone, pizza peel, and can make NYC style- which I actually prefer, but this is pretty easy, and good too!

Its true what they say, you never stop being a parent and all the better if you are remembered for your cooking methinks! Notthing more homely than that! Hmm and pizza too!!

Ruth- Three sets of our close friends have had to have a hand in raising some of their grandkids, because their kids made bad choices...Where my sons have girlfriends, but show no inclination to get married and have kids- yet!

I gained 5 lbs just looking at the picture[okay, and licking the screen]. This is one recipe I am definitely going to steal. Thanks, Buffy. [I will call it Buffy's pizza though.]

Seriously, you should write a recipe book.

Pizza? I thought I was better than you in at least one thing but I can see that wash just wishful thinking that I might be better that you in pizza making.

BD! I love the pizza post - that's some serious pie. I usually buy my crust in a bag from the New Yorker with the pizza joint. Still, I'd love to know how to make a good NY style crust. Mine are usually too fluffy. Any tips?

Have you ever posted your pizza dough recipe? Pizza dough and poached eggs the real way - my nemises-es. This pizza looks crazy good.

Oh you are funny! And my kids are what one would consider adults but they both are still at home and driving us nuts, but we are actually luckier than many. And we love pizza nights! Your pizza looks too fabulous and boy oh boy would my men love those toppings!

buffalodick said...

Vickie- New Yorkers claim it's their water there..also, they don't let it rise as much, cook at really high temps- for a shorter length of time.
Highlander- 1-1/2 cups of warm water, two packs of rapid rise yeast, 2 teaspoons of white sugar, mix in bowl lightly. "Proof" the yeast for 10 minutes, add a bit of salt, 2 cups of flour, mix on low with a dough hook in a bowl coated with olive oil (2 tablespoons), gradually add 2-3 more cups of flour gradually..rest of instructions are in the post!
Beth- Any way you want!
Mona- My friends have never really had a home made pizza- and really went after it!
Jamie- I'm a guy who cooks like a guy- lots of meat and cheese!

Carma Sez said...

Now we're talkin!! My mom made the best homemade pizza - soft fluffy dough topped with lots of cheese and mushrooms...nom nom nom...

Looks delicious.

buffalodick said...

Carma- By the time I'm done, I spend more money than if I bought from the pizza place!

That pizza makes me feel so full just looking at the thick, juicy, cheesey, mushroom and pepperoni goodness.

Odat said...

I don't make my own pizza dough...but I buy it at the corner Italian deli...(we have one an every corner here)....It took me a while to figure out how to "stretch" the dough (it's not as easy as it looks) and I still don't have it down pat.
What's the secret?
Peace

buffalodick said...

T.T.- Go for it!
Chris- My favorite topping is the Italian sausage...
odat- Stiffer dough can have a "memory", but would be more of a New York style crust...
