Wedding Memories-Other People's I Was In, Or Attended.

Odd time for these memories, but not so odd after you read them! My older brother got married..I was 5 or 6,.. He was eighteen or nineteen.. I hadn't hit puberty, but it didn't matter - she was great to me, and a beauty to boot! It was December, he was still in service(USAF!) I was ring bearer, in a little tux, with my hair buttered back, being ever so serious about my job.. marriage lasted 20 yrs., with my Dutch mom saying-"I knew it wouldn't last!" 20 years! hardly a failure.. Next was a friend's of mine's wedding.. He was 18, she was 16..she fainted during the ceremony, and it could have been morning sickness- if you catch my drift.. still married, and all is as well as could be expected.. The point today is, what happens, happens. I remember Christmas electrocutions, cooking disasters, gifts gone horribly wrong, life interfering with plans.. Here's the goofy part- they all make Holidays memories that become part of our traditions!
Do not let them die. Share , If you are a mind.. We still give a rubber Christmas lizard, that goes from family to family!

Opinions and rectums - indeed but in most cases opinions come out of the mouth and shit from the rectum - sadly in your case it's shit at both ends. See you're not the only one who can post silly insults.

Difference is I don't think it's clever or get my rocks off being a carpet for a wannabe dom. Kindly fuck off and die

:::Ignoring the grouch in the room

BD: Why are Dutch moms all the same??? :-) If you remember, I have one too. :-) And, traditions are what it's all about.

My, what crawled up his leg and bit him in the crotch? Talk about a grouch!

Anyhow, what I came here to say is that memories are the best to have, good, bad and ugly, they all need to be cherished, they make us who we are and indeed are great to be remembered in this reminiscing season. Have a great one BD!

B.A. - Most will agree this is a nice blog, not a bitter nor vindictive one. You comment has nothing to do with the post, so why don't you go and ponder that, while the real humans get on with life.
Highlander- The Dutch blood in me gives me so much! A mix of wise and tradition, a mix of open-minded, and "thou shalt".. I became a "Dutch Uncle" through immigrants who were long on common sense, and short on taking short-cuts..
Jen- Thanks! Grinches change, if Dr. Suess was right!
Darngirl- It was a comment to behold! I never hated my brother's ex- I just knew my brother never wanted her as an "ex"..

I remember our silver tree with these glass ornaments that had things inside, a few lights and it lit the room up! Then when I grew up I searched for the tree of my memory and realized it was barely three feet tall and a charlie brown, but ahhh the memories...now they call that tree 'Retro', like me, we always come back!

buffalodick said...

Chef- We had an aluminium tree and blue bulbs, with a light disk to change it's color..Probably worth a fortune to collector's these days..

Great post, Buff. Have a look at mine to see my wedding memories (I was short enough to BE the ring bearer) and I have a Christmas memory all set up for next week.
Baht At: is that Klingon for "asshole?"
Keep at it!

Buff...I've had strange visitors before.
Leave this one, but if it EVER happens again, delete it and report the incident to blogger!

I always wanted one of those silver trees! I very fondly remember my grandmother's and she had a little revolving light thingie that shined on it at night changing the colors that reflected on the tree. I remember thinking it was the prettiest things I'd ever seen.

I am totally with you on this post BD. It's a tough year for my family financially, time wise and everything in between. Yes, it's all about making memories, but these times always makes for the best holidays in the long run somehow.

Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas!

I've got nothing to say about party poopers. My mother and grandmothers were betting that my dearly beloved only married me because I was "in trouble" and he'd dump me once he figured out I'd "tricked him", because I'm so NOT full of sweetness and light. Screw it; it's not their life, and your brother was equally entitled to live his life as he saw fit. My kids still talk about the morning the oldest son tried to play his trumpet to awaken the house and his father threatened to take a torch to the tree and presents (he was 10). Oh, yes, and what about the time he took the shotgun to a juniper? The boys were scared shitless when he showed up in the shotgun and bellowed, "Boys! Outside with me!" (For the record, he thought he saw a rat under the bush, so he shot the root ball.) Ah, great memories! Merry Christmas, Buff!

Awe..that is two bad...family is important mine is crazy boob flasher and you wonder where I get it!!!

My oldest brother tried his hand at wrapping gifts one year instead of letting his wife do it. The wrapping job was the worst we'd ever seen. We all razzed him unmercifully. The next year he purposely wrapped gifts to me and our other brother as horrible as he could muster. From that point on, all three of us try to out do each other with the ugliest package possible. Everyone gets a kick out of seeing what we come up with.

The only wedding hubby and I have been to that has lasted was ours. Every single wedding we've attended has ended in divorce.
We warned our friend who invited us to his wedding in May. We still received and invitation.

Nice tradition with the plastic lizard!

Thanks for your comment today and I read your comment on Brian's blog and what you wrote there will stay with me forever.
Thanks!

(Sorry, can't let a typo go...)

Some things in life are more memorable than others but you are right - they are all memories to be treasured. :)

Ironically the only wedding I have ever been to was my own.
That's too funny about your Mum saying your brother's 20 yr marriage wouldn't last.

No one in my family for generations has been married that long.

Al- By now, I've been to so many weddings, I couldn't remember them all!
otin- So it would seem..
G-man- Good advice, thanks!
Martha- Hope your 2010 is way better!
Most of our tough years were early on..life did get better.
Marjie- When you grow up in a Dutch descended area like Western Michigan, you are used to pessimistic, stubborn, negative vibes! Enjoy that house full of people this Holiday season!
Darngirl- Interesting tradition I could get used to!
Jeff- My hand wrapped presents have been newspaper and duct tape!
GreenE.M.- We are getting to where presents are not wanted! I'd rather see my kids spend it on something else than me!
Ake- Even a bad memory comes with a lesson for the future..
Uber- I've been married 36, my folks made it 64.. I've been to weddings where the marriage was so short, I wanted our gift back!
Snow- I was a cute little kid! What the Hell happened? :)
Gloria- Glad your Mom is still here! Family gatherings tend to get smaller or go away when the Mom isn't there as the matriarch..

"I knew it wouldn't last!" that is a hilarious piece of humor in a not so funny situation. Like you said, we do have a choice over how we remember or reflect on the good and bad over a lifetime. Thanks for sharing this!

I've been around way too long to remember everything! One thing that amazes me when I look back is my parents would not even put up the tree until we went to bed. So they had the tree to decorate (a three day event in my house now!) and all the gifts to put out (and put some together). I bet they never got to bed.

They thought my sister's marriage would never last.....it did. They thought mine would....it didn't. They thought my brother's wouldn't and it didn't..he's on #3. So much for guesswork!
Life is life. Ya gotta roll with the punches.

Marriage is a beautiful thing and symbolizes so many different things.

"they all make Holidays memories that become part of our traditions!" I love that! It's so true.

We started a new tradition this year by making "Reindeer Oats" which is just oatmeal mixed with glitter. We are going to sprinkle it outside so Santa's reindeer can find our house :) Kinda corny, but to a four-year-old it's the coolest thing ever.

Happy Holidays!!

The Blonde Duck said...

I love the rubber lizard tradition. You're right--we both have Christmas in our soul!

buffalodick said...

Rachel- Corny becomes magic, if you believe...Then it becomes a cherished tradition! May your Holidays be the best ever!
BlondeD- I'm getting there- I feel the power coming back!

True love is about unions which aren't brought together due to convenience only.

I used to have a friend who would get in relationships only to get a sugar daddy and then they cheated on the side.

I have nothing against open relationships or honesty. However, I don't particularly care for women who use men like a cash cows. Love is supposed to be mutual.

I think far too many people get married to have the easy life but usually don't stay together when times get tough.

Shelly Rayedeane said...

Oh wait. One more rant to add since I'm in a spunky mood!

I can't stand it when people get divorced and go right from one relationship to the other.

Lol. Rebound love doesn't work.

Why don't people ever learn this? I just don't get it.

Hey? Where did the food posts go damnit? Baaaaa humbug.

One of my cousins got married 2 days after Christmas in 1972, I was about 10 or 11...remember when planes were being hijacked to Cuba? We brought the newlyweds to the airport to leave for their honeymoom with my dear grandmother in tow who was pretty tuned up after the reception. While waiting for the plane with them, my grandmother kept telling passersby that we were all going to Cuba...yes, security started watching her and us more closely.

I miss my grandmother a lot more during Christmas.

buffalodick said...

Donna- And I believe you!
Brian- Yep. Rubber lizard- my sister got it for the next year- laughed our heads off!
Shelly- I have lived long enough, and reasons for marriage have changed into many different reasons, for many different people.. Food is next post!
Katherine- She sounds like she was funny! My7 kid had a Pirate's of Carribean cap pistol nad comong back from Disney World they scanned the luggage and found it.. I told them we were hijacking the plane with a flintlock cap pistol, and going roving.. They were not amused with me..
