Deep Fried Food, A Mess That's Worth It!

A week ago, I bought a fresh jug of cooking oil for one purpose- to deep fry some treats for my out of state son! His last dinner here consisted of shrimp, onion, and fries- all deep fried by yours truly!
Deep fryers can be a bit intimidating to the uninitiated, meaning people like me who never worked in a fast food restaurant, and have found hot oil can burn you unpleasantly! I have deep fried turkey, a lot of Wall-Eye(fly-in fishing in Canada), and numerous other foods- which generally came out great! I got a neat little deep fryer last year for Christmas that is just the right size for a small gathering..
I have used Drake's mix for fry coating for at least 30 years. One bottle of strong beer, one egg, some Lawry's Seasoned salt, black pepper, and enough Drake's to get a consistency(thick or thin) that you like. Refrigerate, or throw some ice cubes in the batter for a tempura type coating..
It's an "eat as you cook" type of meal, bringing batches to the table, while more is cooking.. I made up a cocktail sauce with ketchup, hot sauce, horseradish, and lemon juice- pretty traditional..
My son left for K.C. 6:30AM this morning, to catch the train back to where he now lives.. It was good to see him!

Fry me a river...

I've never fried anything in my life. Better to let someone else do it!

I haven't made home made onion rings in years. Now I need to!

Hope- Welcome! Fried food is great, when done right- but what a mess!
Finn- Everything in moderation- just like your story says!
Griller- If you want it done right, that's what you have to do!

Those caramels you made have me interested! Now where is my candy thermometer I haven't used in 5 years....

I really need to buy a deep fryer. The last one we had sucked, the safety breakaway magnetic power cord would not stay attached so you'd lose temp in the middle of cooking. It's been years since and we haven't bought a replacement yet. Any suggestions on models/brands?

Just telling it like it is said...

I love cooking with beer..or at least drinking it

I love anything fried!

I got a Hamilton Beach as a gift- works fine- and isn't expensive at all! I've seen better ones with more features, but this is a no brainer deep fryer.. cleans up fairly easy..
Darngirl- It makes a killer batter!
BlondeD- You'd love my brain!

Yum! I love deep frying but don't do it very often since it's pretty darn unhealthy and then there's the mess and not to mention the house smelling like a fast food restaurant for days after - but it sure is good! Now that you've mentioned it I just might have to have a fish fry for New Years Eve.
Glad you got to spend some time with your son. Here's to a safe trip back!

buffalodick said...

Martha- Redid kitchen 3 years ago- killer vent system that takes care of smell! Good fried food doesn't retain as much grease as you might think- and if you do this infrequently- not that unhealthy! You are going to die someday- why not have some fun before you do? :)
I learned this the hard way- I almost died nine years ago...

It's nice that your son can come, and I'd be a whole lot happier with him leaving by train than car at 6:30AM! My boys drive home, but there are no trains readily available, the nearest station being Philly, 2 hours away with no traffic.

I don't deep fry. My dearly beloved is concerned about me burning my delicate skin with splatters, and has decreed that we are a fry-free home.

sign me up for that meal...love fresh fish or shrimp fried up..side of fries...i am pretty much in heaven.

Marjie- Fried food is dicey but worth every bite!
Brian- As you can see by photo- good stuff!
DogB- Oh so bad...Oh so good!

Peanut oil? I love fried foods.. I love all things bad for you. Read into it what you will.

buffalodick said...

Donna- Why do I think you like wearing it better than cooking with it? HeeHeeHee...

Yum. I really only fry one thing and that's fried chicken....and I make a mean fried chicken. But I do that in a deep skillet. We got out son a deep fat fryer for Christmas last year. He loves it. I wish I could have been there eating up that wonderful and delicious fried food with you!

He he he fried food is good eats! Did you see how I slipped in friend foods with sparkling wine on my post *wink* Well it does go well, so I am sure a few will be glad I gave them an excuse to slip in the meal!I will confess I had french fries for my side at lunch :)

I want one of those little counter fryers I keep seeing, but it was either that or my dehydrator, and we both know that has its place...since I am hoping a friend brings me back so wild game to dry and I get my batch!

Re: your comment about my comment (LOL) I totally agree! We only live once and something is going to kill us sooner or later (lets all hope for later - much, much later). I don't believe in deprivation. I believe moderation is the key!

Have some fun you say? Got peanut oil? - Sorry, couldn't resist after reading Donna's comment! :-)

I have a tiny deep fat fryer that I have never used because it is such a stinky adventure. I'm waiting until summer when I can use it in the garage.

Peanut Oil?

Your son lives in KC?

The last time that I was there, I drug my whole family to Arthur Bryants BBQ.
What a religious experiance that was!!!

buffalodick said...

Jeanne- I wish I could have cooked more for him- but his agenda was a little different than ours..
Highlander- I can do chicken strips in this fryer- but that's it...
Chef- That's what mine is, a counter sized fryer from Hamilton Beach!
Martha- Ladies! Behave! :)
Kate- It's a production, all right..
G-man- There are so many good BB-Q joints in K.C., it's unbelievable!

UBERMOUTH said...

I have never tried deep fried shrimp. Sounds lovely but fried foods are so bad for you.

buffalodick said...

Uberlips- Once in awhile, treat yourself! We don't do this every day...

Deep fat frying still scares the bejebus out of me even after all these years! :0

Isn't it amazing how deep frying something makes it even better! I had a deep fried Snickers bar at the fair last year. AMAZING!

buffalodick said...

Gloria- Deep fried foods are a mess, so I normally wait for a group to share with.. but for my first born, who I don't get to see much- anytime is great!

pam said...

I'm afraid if I got a deep fryer, I'd end up deep frying everything.

buffalodick said...

Pam- Nah- it's a mess, only for special occasions!

Fried food is delicious! No doubt that the fried food made for your son was extra delicious because it was made for him.

Velva- It was pretty good! You have a great New Year, too!

I used to fish for G.Northern Pike in Georgian Bay. God what a great hit they make. Almost knock you out of the boat. And then we'd fry 'em up for a super dinner over a campfire.
Great memories.

Glad you got to see your boy after 2 years, wow thats a long time...... locking all me lads in the cupboard so they cant moved away LOL

I think if deep frying is done proper then its scrummous.... I will admit except for the odd portion of fish and chips from the chippie we very rarely have anything deep fried (wonder why me arse is so fat then lol) but I did use to LOVE battered and deep fried mushrooms :) - as usual your grub looks fit for a king..

x

buffalodick said...

Barb- Northern pike are tasty, but boy- are they full of bones!
Marmy- For the mess it makes, once in awhile is all we do!

tavolini said...

I leave the frying for professionals--that way they can clean up the mess ;)

Looks and sounds delicious--I'm glad your son could make it out to Michigan! Happy New Year to you and your family!!

buffalodick said...

Lini- Good idea, but my home made is still super crisp, lighter battered and hot when you eat it..
