Covered Ground...The Simple Taco!

We had Long John Silver's Seafood take-out last night, and for the first time ever I had to wait.. Then got home and had gotten the soggiest smelly fish we had ever received! Experiences like this, usually cures me from take out food from anywhere for a month!
Tonight I did home-made tacos, everything from scratch, but the those great flat bottomed corn shells from Old El Paso! Cut up fresh tomato, shredded cheese, shredded fresh lettuce, sliced black olives, and a ground beef taco meat seasoned from my extensive spice and herb collection! Topped with Chi-Chi's medium hot salsa, and/or Mr's Renfroe's Jalepeno salsa, it really warmed us on a cold Michigan night!
The cooking will be heating up, with the Holiday outings kicking in..
Watched the Julia Child movie a couple of nights ago..tavern I go into got a new female bartender who stands 6'1-1/2" inches without shoes.. If she would have yelled "Bon Appetit!", I would have fainted...

I love anything Mexican food! Give me some habanero salsa and I am a happy guy!

The fish sounded gross?

Mmmmm, I love tacos!

I love Chi-Chi's hot sauce! and of course if soup was not my middle name it would be TACO! Yell it aloud and I will head straight over...

I have not seen that movie yet...

I did make a brisket before my kitchen just got the axe today, we have water seeping up from the ground right in front of the stove...not my idea of a Merry Christmas...

I may be watching that movie tomorrow night over at mom's. Never had Long John Silver's take out before. Is it usually palatable?

I haven't compared brands of taco sauce, but we always buy the HOT!!!

I've not made tacos forEVER. Sounds so good. Long John Silver's????.....tis the season. You didn't say if you liked the movie or not?

Fast food style sea food just seems wrong. And dangerous too.

I love that movie. The book was awesome too. Her new book just came out and I'm going to have to check it out.

Just telling it like it is said...

Sounds kind of fishy if you ask me

bummer on the long johns - there arent any in NYC but that and taco bell are about the only two fast foods I would eat - oh and popeyes chicken on a picnic in central park with my son...now your tacos, on the other hand, sound good to go!

Yum tacos. Did you like the Julia movie?

In the last six months, we have dined out three times, and take out only twice.

Stay at home, save LOTS of money and eat better

good post

Long John Silver's is my take-out fish place. Sometimes good, sometimes not. I love the flat bottomed taco shells!

I watched that movie last week, too. And me and Julia? Yeah. We're big girls. I've been practicing my Bon Appetit! ever since.

otin- Fish is usually good, but it was not crisp, and slopped up with tartar sauce...
Jen- My wife's idea...
Chef- Good luck with the flooring!
Jeff- Our first bad meal there...
BlueV- I try different ones for different foods..
Highlander- Movie was good- wife liked better than me.. Streep had that shrill goofy voice of Julia down pat!
Jules- It was interesting how it incorporated a food blog into a movie!
Darngirl- Take out can be dicey..
DogB- Good fish is so much harder to find here...
Peach- Pretty much enjoyed the movie...
Griller- I tell people the same thing, but some days there is no time to cook..
Pam- Usually good, but they missed it big time that night!
Kate- She had to be wearing platform shoes!

Cracking up over the bartender comment.

I have fallen in love with those flat bottom shells too! I keep saying one day I'm going to make corn tortillas from scratch and fry them into hard shells....but damn that looks like so much work.

Chris- You read my mind! I have the flour, the tools, and the technique- and still haven't done them from scratch! I have (and will again!) failed at new culinary challenges, but have to get over my phobia of failing while cooking.. Ego Boy lives! The only real failure is the person who doesn't try!

Taco night's always easy for me. I love just plopping crap on the counter and telling the troops to feed themselves. Hubby excluded, of course. If I don't serve himself, and he overeats, it's my fault.

tacos are just about my boys favorite meal...so we have it often...i like mine with a little extra kick...

Love it. I had tacos yesterday for lunch. Can't eat just one!

buffalodick said...

Marjie- Let him! He'll learn..
Brian- I love kick, but when sharing, I back off!
Marmy- You would make a great neighbor!
Kris- These flat bottomed taco shells hold huge amounts!

Buff....... I know one thing, we would laff and laff most of the day away if I was your neighbour :)

Marmy- Our first house was small and old- we would work all day, then come home and work on the house until dusk.. we would hit the front porch for a beer, and neighbors watching our progress would come over, until there were 4-10 of us.. Good neighbors are a pleasure...

Let's back up a minute - you were expecting something besides soggy crap from Long John Silver's?

Velva said...

Yuck, soggy fish from Long John Silver's...I would be cured too. You prepared a nice alternative, great tacos! Looks good. I broke into a laugh when you wrote that your tavern got a new 6'1-6'2 bartender...had she yelled 'Bon Appetit!" I would have fainted"..... That was damn funny.
Looking forward to your holiday cooking posts.

buffalodick said...

Sornie- I've been there 1/2 dozen times, and this was the first bad fish I got!
Velva- It was quite a coincidence!

I LOVEEEEEEE those flat bottomed taco shells. They are a staple in the Pond.

BD-- I have 13 inch heels that make me 6 1/2 feet tall. Bon apetit, my friend.

How funny you talk about tacos and high heeled women in same post;)

Barbara said...

I mean what else at Long John Silver's did you expect???????

Am now reading Julia Child's book about her years in France. Not quite as it was depicted in the movie so I'm really having fun reading it. Any cook would.

urban vegan said...

This reminds me--I should make tacos more often. Happy Holidays, Buff!

buffalodick said...

BlondeD- It's soft shell vs. hard shell here- with me preferring soft shell!
Donna- Well, I can see you're back to what passes for normal!
Barb- Movies always tend to embellish a book, don't they?
UrbanV- We try and mix up simple and Holiday treats this time of year!

We were running errands Monday night and stopped at our new Long John Silvers...I'm cured, they sucked big time! Guess I'm a snob but it looked like LJS attracted every low life in a 10 mile radius.

How did yu like the flat bottomed taco shells?

The crack about the bar tender made me laugh.

buffalodick said...

Katherine- We had a handful of really excellent fish sandwiches from there- crisp, hot, not greasy, or over sauced.. I bumped it up to a couple of combo meals, and the magic was gone!
Taco shells are the best invention since the wheel! They hold lots of filling, and get more in you than on you- if you know what I mean!
She's a big girl, good looking, not fat or skinny- just well, big! After seeing that movie, the thought was impossible to repress..

Gene- Her voice always sounded like she was being goosed! :)
Ake- Time, sometimes is the factor!

Are those pictures from your cooking ,Buffy? How tidy a cook you are. They look scrumptious!

BD: Hope you had a great dinner, demon child notwithstanding.
We've got a demon child coming too, aged 2½. I am bracing myself.

Once, when my kids were little, one of them stuffed a paper mache wise man down the toilet. It swelled up and clogged everything. So I guess I had a demon child too. He grew up nicely, though. ;)
