Another Blast From My Past... Pronto Pups!

What in the world is a Pronto Pup? Simply put, it's a corn dog! Corn meal mixed with flour, spices and liquid to form a batter that a hot dog on a stick can be dipped in, and then deep fried. Why do I call them a Pronto Pup? Because in the cities of Grand Rapids, Holland, and Grand Haven, MI that's all we knew them by..
One place in Western Mi you could get these was one of the few remaining Pronto Pup stands in the nation! A small building on the channel of the Grand River, it was only open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. There was always a line, all day long! If you went to Grand Haven State Park, you got a Pronto Pup- always..
Tuesday I made one of my stock up trips to Bird's Market. I picked up about 30lbs. of meat and poultry- and found some corn dogs, 16 to a box, in the frozen food section. I had been passively craving for one of these for awhile, so I picked some up. Last night I heated them according to instructions, and we enjoyed a pretty darn good corn dog! Same stuff you would put on a hot dog, can be used as a dip.. An afterthought I had- a chili cheese dip would have been perfect for this!

This is my first visit to your post...you've been posting for quite a while- don't know how I missed you.
Never was much of a corn dog lover (however have always liked hot dogs at the ball park), but had to comment on your post because I have a sister in Grand Haven. I'll pass your blog address on to her.....

Barbbara- Thanks for stopping by! I'm sure your sister and I would have many shared places we've been in the area!

I've never had a corn dog. YOU bought 30 pounds of meat? Who do you think you are, me? Or were you just shopping for a month? You know when all the troops are here, I cook 5# per night, right? Now, with the small family thing going on, it's only 2 to 3 pounds. Sometimes I get confused, and we have plenty of leftovers.

buffalodick said...

Marjie- 20lbs. of it was 10lbs. of ground beef, and 10lbs. of boneless butterflied chix breasts.. The savings is insane! I get home and repackage it into usable portions, and freeze it..

Now see? I had always been lead to believe that a Pronto Pup was a flour based batter where a corn dog was ... well ... a corn meal based batter. No?

That is according to the MN State Fair Pronto Pup cookery. Not sure if they are a Pronto Pup authority or not ;-)

Oh man, I haven't had a corn dog in ages.

I've never tasted a corn dog but I would like to :)

Our pronto pups came at the Heart of Illinois Fair in Peoria... Must have been a stand set up by your guy.

AHHH memories, Tanya Tucker 14 years old singing about finding a man like daddy and Loretta Lynn passing out slurring words from popping pills, all on the same bill!

Prof Shorty could live on "Pronto Pups" alone. They are his favorite. I'm surprised I've never heard them called that and I've also never thought of dipping them in chili cheese dip!
Tomorrow for Halloween, my best friend's husband is whipping up a batch of chili and we're going to have chili dogs as our Halloween meal. Guests of honor will be a lion, an elephant, Bumblebee the Transformer, and Nancy Drew.

Have a delicious weekend!

I love corn dogs. Something about the sweet dough with that salty dog...mmmmm. I'm from Hutchinson, Ks, home of the Kansas State Fair. There were Pronto Pup stands at the fair. I didn't know them by anything else for years. Might just have to splurge and have a corn dog in honor of you BD. Thanks for the post.

I don't really like plain old hotdogs, but corn dogs are a whole another ball game.

Looks great to me.

Special places from your childhood were often not the highest quality food, but you didn't ever really know as it was special to you!

I have never had a corn dog[and did not know what they were until you explained] but I love hotdogs-even raw.

My son loves corndogs!! I have not ever ate one. I do indulge in fried fish a few times a month. Yummy!!

No time to cook again this weekend. I have next Wednesday off to take my son to a doctors appointment. Hopefully, I will catch up on some things and cook some food.

It has been about 35 years since I had a corn dog!

That makes me crave the fair.

buffalodick said...

K- It was good, for a change of pace!
Larry- Welcome to the blog! Anything on a stick when you're a kid is good!
Uber- You would love these!
Hit40- One son loves hot dogs, the other hardly ever eats them..
Otin- Time for a corn dog!
Kate- A State Fair staple!

Now that's something I can't eat. Ever.

There's something about corn dogs which doesn't necessarily agree with my lips. Or perhaps I'm just self conscious when I'm eating them. I'm not a hot dog fan either really unless I'm camping. Then I prefer them burnt to a crisp.

Scarlet said...

My daughter loves corn dogs, but I don't even think I've tried one!! Now you have me curious about a food I thought was basically for kids. Seriously. I don't think I've ever seen an adult a eat corn dogs! They're like Cheetos to me. :)

buffalodick said...

BlueV- We all have that something we can't eat!
Shelly- Popsicles? Bananas? Slo-Poke Suckers? I'm getting an idea for a video... :)
Scarlet- Cheesy Poofs are a great side dish to corn dogs!

Chris said...

Corn dogs are amazing aren't they? There's a little place here that makes the best corn dogs, onion rings, and funnel cakes. Takes a bit longer to get your food but it's all cooked to order, so you know it's fresh! (and HOT)

buffalodick said...

Chris- A good onion ring, done right- is as tasty as anything you can eat!

Donna-FFW said...

Geez, BD, why do you do this to me. I cant even tell ya what I think when I see things like that on a stick.

Bet its delicious..love the pronto pup name, cute.

JihadGene said...

Corn dogs! Ah, the memories!

buffalodick said...

Donna- Because i can... :) Don't blame me, you're the one always playing "find the phallus symbol"!!!
Gene- I saw them, and had to get some!

I love corn dogs! To echo Lea Ann, I know the term Pronto Pup, too, from the Kansas State Fair. They're delicious. I like your idea of using chili cheese dip. Yum!

Shelly- I've got plenty left- and some chili sauce all made up..
G-man- I'll try making them one day soon..
Nat- I love regional names for a common food!

Princess Nagger loves corn dogs - I'm going to tell her they're called 'Pronto Pups' and see what she thinks. ;)

Christo Gonzales said...

I love a good corn dog - I have tried making them and it is one sloppy endeavor

buffalodick said...

Stacy- I bet she will love it!
DogB- It has kept me from trying, but I think the key is a thick batter and a deep fryer-at right temp.

pinknest said...

I LOVE corn dogs. Growing up, there was this corn dog stand at the mall that my friends and I would frequent. A nice corn dog with a lemonade was perfect.

tavolini said...

oooh--I love corn dogs! Atlanta has a big festival every year called Corndogorama with bands and freshly made corndogs. This is one where the vegetarian version really doesn't taste too much different than the real thing ;)

buffalodick said...

Pink- Corn dogs are Americana at it's hokey, tasty best!
Tavolini- Wow! I want to be there!

tamilyn said...

Just a clarification on Pronto Pup. A Pronto Pup is made with a flour batter and a Corn dog is made with a corn meal batter. I only mention this as it is a battle at the MN state fair. If you go, never ever call one by the other's name. Live have been lost over less!

buffalodick said...

Tamilyn- It has always been a mix, in a good one- to a greater or lesser degree! Thanks for the info! Funny how people get mad about food! Come by anytime...
