German Chocolate Cake- Kind Of...

We like to keep a sweet in the house, for when the sugar attack hits. The carrot cake was gone, so I decided to whip up a quick dessert. I had a box mix for German Chocolate cake, and a frosting mix that was pecan and coconut..I had some left over dried, sweetened cranberries, and some walnuts left- so I threw them in the batter! It came out tasty...usually all people throw in a cake is some chocolate chips, so this was kind of different- in a good way!
Wife goes on normal schedule starting next week, so food postings should start being a little more regular, and hopefully interesting!

I've thrown the fruit and nuts into muffins, but would not have thought to add them to cakes.

I bet the cranberries were a great addition.

whoot whoot - I vote for interesting...I cant wait! The cake sounds great but we are allergic to walnuts around here...bummer!

Jen- A piece was mindful of a frosted muffin!
Pam- I like the darn things..dried cherries even better!

DogB- Pecans would have worked even better!

Brian- I don't even know what I'm going to do, until I do it! I just can't follow a recipe!

I love cranberries Buffalo specially with chocolate, sound delicious!! xxx gloria

Gloria- And I love the tropical fruits you use! We tend to use dried fruits, meats, etc., to our heritage of long winters..the fresh fruits, vegetables, and seafood of your country makes me envious! You're a sweetie, in any country!

Sounds great BD! Reminded me of my hippie granola bars :-)

More interesting than Cake?

Hahahahahahahahahaha.....

Martha- Took forty years for me to go hippie- I've grown a pony tail for the first time in my life! "I've looked at Life from both sides now, from win and lose- and still somehow..It's Life's illusions I recall, I really don't know Life at all" Judy Collins..it made sense decades ago, but I only understood it recently..

G-man- never met a guy on the same page as me- until you!

You take care of the Mrs but I suspect she does the same for you! That's how it is in our house too.

Chris- she does what I don't, I do what she doesn't..you nailed it!

I love the idea of cranberry walnut cake - great idea. I'm liable to eat anything when the sugar attack hits; this sounds much healthier than a handful of Jelly Bellys. And glad to see you appreciate the yin and yang of things. :)

lol, awesome! I'm glad your wife is getting a better schedule.

As for sweets, German Chocolate Cake is a hard one to beat :)

OK, I'm just going to bring my plate by and fill it up with all your good food!

Love the addition to the cake. Ya gotta have something to go with that afternoon tea. I just discovered dried fruits and nuts in pancakes, I'm adding them to everything now. I love a little crunch in my baked goods. Glad the wife is getting a better schedule, can't wait for what comes next.

Someone online was denigrating German Chocolate cake the other day and I was surprised. What's not to like? It has always been my youngest son's favorite cake- he still asks for it on his birthday. He takes it to work to share and it disappears in a flash.

Yours looks great! Smart idea to add the cranberries- I'd skip the walnuts and add pecans.

Love German Chocolate Cake. I also enjoy reading all of the comments to your posts. I don't do that on anyone's blog but yours. I've always like pony tails on men.

Sounds good...I like walnuts, always have. I know some get this bitter taste from the oil, but you have created a new 'sugar rush' for me here Buff!

Yes dear we are lucky in veggies and fruits, to the summer make this: freeze all berries, I had made with blueberries (so cheap this year) raspeberries and blackberries, I have a friend told me she freeze plums! thanks dear you are so sweet! gloria

Vick- I'm getting more interested in textures of food...
Tavolini- Everyone is a cake eater in this house- I like pie better!
T.T.- I always have to monkey with a recipe...
RLM- Plenty of leftovers, always!
Gypsy- I'm leaning more and more that way myself!
Barb- Mainly I'd guess it was the coconut- you like the stuff, or you don't!
Highlander- Swore when I retired from the suit and tie world, I would grow one!
Chef- I like what people around here call "squirrel" nuts- hazel nuts, pecans, walnuts, Brazil nuts, hickory nuts, butternuts, much more than cashews or
peanuts..
Gloria- Fruit sounds good right now..
Ake- No cake?

Oh Unclebuf, you got me....I love sweets--I was born with a hardcore sweet tooth, and homemade sweets are the bestest of all. I feel so much less guilty for having those around because they don't have as many icky extra preservatives so though they may not be great for you, they are the lesser of two delicious evils! ;)

I have not had German Chocolate cake in a looong time.

Rachel- How was your brisket? Bet it was great..
Marjie- That's why it was a box mix- I wasn't up to the real deal!

I made a white chocolate and apricot cake last week, and even though it has 2 whole slabs of which chocolate in it, it was not very chocolatey :)
