Peasant Food, and Food For V.I.P.s..

Sometimes we want simple, sometimes we splurge.. We usually splurge after two or three nights of simple! Hump Day(Wed.!!), we just wanted a simple tuna fish salad sandwich, on that home made wheat bread- just right for the moment! Thursday found my wife joining a bunch of other women after work, who walk for exercise in the halls of a local grade school.. I made a baked mac-n-cheese (negating any good the walk did for her!).. it tasted simple, and good. Friday, we determined we hadn't had a good steak over a charcoal grill in a while, so that was what happened.. I had played Keno that day, and had won about 60 bucks, so I decided Prime Beef Rib-eyes were the treat! $17 a pound, and thick to boot, $35.00 is a lot of dough in these parts for two steaks! I cooked both, one was medium rare, the other rare. We split the medium rare, along with a roasted(baked) potato and fresh bread- for a great Friday night supper! The rare steak will become the world's greatest Fajitas tonight! The butcher cracked me up.. I asked if he had some deli Gouda, or Edam cheese- and he had never heard of them! He then tells me he's of Dutch descent... Thank God he knows quality meat!

LOL a Dutchman that doesn't know Gouda or Edam? He was kidding right?

I couldn't believe it! Premier meat market, Dutch descended, and no Mettwurst either!

It is amazing how much beef costs!!

otin- This place has it's own connection to a Prime beef herd, and are still overpriced! But God, it is the best in this town- outside of a restaurant can offer!

What is it about baked mac and cheese that makes it so extra special? Now I'm craving it.

WHAT ? i am a south asian of distant far out dutch decent and I know gouda and edam... !...I love the tuna pasta...although was raised to always eat my meat well done ( my husband can't tolerate how i OVER do it and so always fixes his own steak...always).

Jules- Mac-n-Cheese is like Home base!
Nat- People can forget their own heritage in less than one generation, if the generation before them doesn't teach them.. sad... I never saw pink in beef until I was 14 years old! The Dutch around here cooked it until gray or dry- usually both!

You have a designated 'hump' day?
What if one of you were ill? Would it have to be resceduled or just passed over for the next week?

My dearly beloved won't touch M&C, but he does love a good steak. However, at $17 per pound times 5 to 6 pounds for the whole family, I could go broke feeding us. So, we stick with the cheaper cuts *sigh*

Prime ribeye? Thank you god for giving us cows, especially the prime ones! :)

I bet those fajitas are tasting pretty damn good right now.

Nice score with the Keno win.

It is definitely nice to treat yourselves every now and then :)

(and I bet two steaks of that quality at a restaurant would be a bit more than $35!)

Peasant food is the best food.

Uber- It's been called Hump Day (middle of the week!) over here forever- or at least 30 years!
Marjie- I looked at the guy like he was insane- but the steaks were top quality!
Chris wife still sick- Toasted ham and brick cheese tonight! Fajitas Sunday!
Tavolini- I keep telling myself that, over and over...
UrbanV- My mantra.. I like simple things done well..

I wish someone had mac n cheese waiting for me when I came home from exercising. Oh, wait a minute, maybe I don't.

Wonderful and frugal. I love how you reuse the leftovers for a new meal. We already packed away our grill for the winter.

mmm...steak...we just had fajitas last night...polished them off for lunch today...hope you are having a great weekend!

Donna-FFW said...

Pricey for the meat, but getting 2 meals out of it makes it not so bad, and quality meals at that! Hope you educated your butcher.

buffalodick said...

Pam- We ate it weekly while saving for our first house. Probably saved $12.00 total! We laugh about that!
Ace- Had to pick-up some supplies for the fajitas- Sunday dinner!
Brian- We are trying, but can't seem to shake the bug we both have!
Donna- Most I've paid for steaks in a long time! They were excellent quality though..

Today I am attempting Home-Made Tamales..Wish me luck!

Char said...

Damn, you keep mentioning that homemade bread! You do that, too?
Do you hire out?

xoxo

buffalodick said...

Shelly I could get twice as much rib-eye steak at Sam's Club..
G-man- Had a good week playing Keno!
Tamales are a lot of work- make lots of them and freeze some!
Char- There isn't much I don't cook..

I can just imagine the smile on your face at the butcher's... And I have yet to actually have homemade macaroni and cheese. Those steaks sound delicious!!

I always think about the cost of food like this--it's still cheaper than going to a steakhouse and cooked just the way you like it. :)

Snowniece- I was in a hurry, and I knew steaks would be good, but pricey!

I wasn't hungry until I read this, and the mention of three of some of my favorite things, Steak, Potato, Mac and cheese.yum

Highlander- Just made the fajitas from left over steak- killer!

So you appreciate the old fashioned charcoal grill also! We tried the gas grills a long time ago when they were first coming out, but the flavor was missing. Now we just always use charcoal!

buffalodick said...

BlueV- Charcoal and wood always my first choice!!

Just telling it like it is said...

There you do with that homemade bread that I could totally make out with...

buffalodick said...

Darngirl- I like white homemade better than this whole grain stuff!

I am very lucky here with a very reasonable meat costs. Just got back from Arizona, and they are nuts with the costs of good beef out there,

And winning at Keno!!! I never have (always play at breakfast, but never got a dime

Chef E said...

Explain Keno Buff- I see it in casinos but have no clue...

I am with Chris- I see a cow I see diagrams of cuts...now and then I see their face, but even then I think of how good a brisket would taste right then...I have yet to cook prime rib at home...maybe when my son comes home in January...

Stacy Uncorked said...

I love that you stick with a charcoal grill - there's no comparison, really, especially when you can add wood chips for more depth of flavor. :) I also love that you treated yourselves with quality steaks from your Keno winnings! :)

Hope you're all feeling better soon!

buffalodick said...

ChefE- Club Keno- 1-80 numbers, you can pick up to 10, or as few as 1 and bet accordingly.. 3 numbers at a two dollar bet will yield 54 bucks if you match all 3.. 2 out of three at 2 bucks would win you 4 bucks..more to it, but that is the rough format!
I have smoked a prime rib, but prefer to roast in an oven...
Stacy- That is probably my 6th Meco grill in 30 years! Cheaper, uses less charcoal, and has more grill area than the better known Weber grill- I use in all year long!
