A Short Overview of Communications...Could We?

The human race has been separated, and at other times joined though the ability/inability to communicate..
Jungle drums, smoke signals, imitation animal sounds, etc.. Then came the written word- sometimes symbols, then symbols that stood for what we think of as "letters". The written word was, and still is the baseline for communicating. Telegraphs, telephones, fax, cell phones, text messaging, computers, etc.- has given us more ways to communicate than ever! Yet, the daily misunderstandings are getting greater..
I remember when Esperanza(SP)was being promoted as a world language- didn't work.. I always thought "signing"(how deaf people communicate) is something everyone could learn and be universal..Imagine going anywhere and be understood- how cool would that be!
Made some from scratch French onion soup last night- that got thrown out.. Wife didn't get in contact about a hair cut appointment after work, she had dinner with girlfriend.. Communication- did it used to be simpler, or is it just me?

As they say, too much of anything is as bad as too little.

It is just you. I guess we must let our closest and dearest feel free to do what they want at times, even if it means not communicating or telling afterwards. This gives them a sense of empowerment that they might need at times.

Simpler. Much.

Sorry to add my comment, but who told you Esperanto "did not work"

During a short period of 121 years Esperanto is now in the top 100 languages, out of 6,800 worldwide, according to the CIA factbook. It is the 17th most used language in Wikipedia, and in use by Skype, Firefox and Facebook.

Native Esperanto speakers,(people who have used the language from birth), include George Soros, World Chess Champion Susan Polger, Ulrich Brandenberg the new German Ambassador to NATO and Nobel Laureate Daniel Bovet.

Further information can be seen at http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8837438938991452670 A glimpse of the language can be seen at http://www.lernu.net

Thanx 4 that.

I get a bit angry when people tell me that Esperanto does not work, when I speak it fluently.

Bonan vesperon!

Or as they say in Esperanto "Have a good evening"

I live in London, so it's evening here!

Mona- It just demostrates how dependent we've become on lugging a cell phone around 24/7...
Kate- To this day, I feel technology moved so fast, it literally separated generations and how they communicate...
Brian- Didn't mean to offend you, but you are the first person in my 50+ years on the planet I've met that does speak it.. I heard of it when young and hoped more would embrace it..
K- I was pretty pissed, and I didn't care for the haircut she got either- my hair is longer than hers now..
Starbender- In sales most of my career, the danger and frustration of miscommunication is why body language is so important.. and you don't get that in conversations where you physically aren't there..

buffalodick said...

Tried to get on Brian's blog- don't waste your time... One dimension- stats he posts are a joke, he is not worthy of read... More people speak the dead language of Latin.. He missed my point entirely.. Post the real numbers- how many people speak this langauge? Percent-wise against 6.5 billion people?

We have a white board and a calendar that I'm supposed to use to notify Old Dog if I'm out and about for the evening. Most of the time I remember....

Oh NO! French onion soup is yummy.

PS. We looked up MI weather this morning, for my husband's FF trip to Detroit, and it mentioned SNOW SHOWERS for Tues.?! What is wrong with your state?

buffalodick said...

CDB- No jobs, unless you plow snow! Spring- 2 minutes long, don't blink- Summer- breeding moquitoes.. Fall- monsoon, with pretty colored trees.. Winter- the rest of the year..But honestly- we do have a few glorious moments that make living here pretty OK...

I don't want to intrude on a private party ... but can I take you back to the Esperanto thing? You might want to take a look at www.esperanto.net which contains a lot of useful information on the language. Of course, Esperanto has far fewer speakers than English. We can't ever knoew how many, but I'd say a couple of a million is a fair estimate.

buffalodick said...

Bill- 2 million divided by 6.5 billion is what? Have fun with the language, but it ain't catching on.. My point was, let's all learn a simple way to communicate- sign language seems to be the simplest way to do this...

Donna-FFW said...

Communication is too easy now a days..there is no excuse for lack of it..Was the onion soup a surprise?? Bet if she would have known she'd have come running home with high heeels on , lipstick in place, just a raring to go.. I would have.. Was looking forward to your onion soup, wanted to see how it compared to mine..

buffalodick said...

Donna-Yellow onion, chix broth, a little brown gravy, seasonings. Sauteed cut onions until almost carmelized in butter- topped with melted Mozerella cheese..

Heff said...

You threw out French Onion Soup ? For shame !

Angel said...

EVERYTHING used to be simpler...

buffalodick said...

Hef- Went past prime simmering...
Beth- Seems like it to me, too..

tavolini said...

I've met a few people who cling to Esperanto, too. Meh.

The whole communication bit has gotten somewhat crazy--I still get annoyed that I have to answer my cell phone. I tell you what, though--once it broke, I was LOST. There are no pay phones left anywhere in this town.

buffalodick said...

T.L- Ain't it the truth.. I'm old enough to remember phones with cords, party lines, and when MaBell worked every time!

You would think in today's technological world, communication would be easier. But maybe your wife thought she told you?

I don't know. My husband fails to communicate with me sometimes and he tells me "I thought I told you?""
