How I Invented Mac-n-Cheeseburger Soup....

In a couple of weeks or so, there is supposedly going to be a soup contest at a bar owned by a friend of mine. He has had chili contests the last two years, and picking a winner has caused more trouble than it's worth! There's about 7 of us that make up two of the best chili teams in the region, and we would enter at least 3 or 4 of the chilis in the contest. Picking the winning chili almost always led to hard feelings among good friends, so a soup contest was proposed! Soups can be so different from each other, a winner would be easier(and safer!) to pick. Now, what soup should I make? It has to be something never seen before, tasty to a less than sophisicated(working mans' bar in a not-so-hot neighborhood!)palate. What would everybody eat there normally? A cheeseburger! Now how to turn it into a tasty soup?
Typical Cheesburger ingredients:
1. Ground beef (yup!)
2. Cheese- a sauce? (YO!)
3. Catsup (How about tomato paste-yeah!)
4. Onions (You bet!)
5. Bacon (I would!)
6. Tomato (Diced canned ones would work!)
7. Pickle (Not in soup, ever!)
8. Lettuce (No!)
9. Mayo (Hell, no!)
Typical Soup ingredients:
1. Broth (Beef, for sure!)
2. Filler- Potato or pasta (Macaroni!)
Toppings:
1. Shredded aged sharp cheddar (I'm gonna!)
2. Croutons (Absolutely!)
Armed with what I reasoned would be harmonious ingredients, I went about creating the soup. No recipe to go by, some things were do-overs! Bacon fried, put aside to be cut into bite sized pcs. Onions sauteed in bacon grease- came out limp, greasy and tasteless. Used fresh cut onion thrown into the broth. Fried ground beef that were shaped into mini burgers(smaller next time!)Everthing but the cheese sauce, macaroni, and toppings went into a crock pot on high for 3 hrs. Added the cheese sauce, cooked and added the macaroni- then allowed to heat back up to simmer. Topped with cheese and croutons, and this stuff was plain food eating at its' best! Very filling, as you can imagine!
Anyone out there have a better name than Mac-n-Cheesburger Soup? And "Liquid Heart Attack" is already taken....

I would love to be the "taste-tester"! This sounds delicious!

This both attracts and repels me... yet I couldn't tell you why.

I thought soups were supposed to be watery, this looks more like stew. Creative, though, very creative! I hope you win!

in_spired- "Dialing in" a new recipe can take a little tweaking and taste-testing!
finn- If you were waiting for the first snowfall of the year Tuesday, you'd probably find it more attractive! Not a "tropics" kind of consistency...
jen- I actually do plan to "thin it out" next time! Nobody ever had to look far for chunks of food in the soups I make!

What about 'buffalo thrill' or 'meat maketh the broth' then there's 'life fluid',Mmmm not that good now I read them back, but it is early here......

Queenie- Get back to me when you've had your coffee... Your suggestions sounded, well, suggestive!
nancybee- I knew our neighbors to the North would like it!
R.L.L.- Lord knows there were leftovers! I can't make a small batch of anything...
DogB- Not bad, but cheese is always the hook!
beth- Wind was blowing about 30 mph., and it had hailed 1 hr. before we had the soup...
Ake- Actually, that's not too bad!
Tanya- Universal comfort food! No comments on your blog no more? Bummer! Think about that one for me, will you? Please?

I've heard of this before ...

I think Al Gore said he invented it while looking for some sustenance while inventing the internet.

Mel said...

LOL at Paul!!

Man that soup looks SOOOOOOO good and I am not a big soup eater.

I thought of you today, the town I work in had the annual chili cookoff, right in front of my office! I didnt stay though, I cant see very well to drive after dark with these cataracts.

Queenie said...

Gosh! they do don't they, sorry but have you got any sweeties mister???

buffalodick said...

DogB- That really ain't too bad, either!
Paul- No, soup is what he got the Nobel Prize for, I think....
mel- Night driving was not an option anymore 2 months before the surgery! All the headlights look like big diffused halos, don't they? Pretty, but deadly! As it progresses, everything looks hazier and hazier....like it was airbrushed...
Queenie- Actually, it was the high "point" of my day! Death by innuendo, what a way to go.... :)

YUM! I'm taking a copy and will make it soon. A friend of mind "invented" Ruben soup which was delicious!
He kept the recipe, so I can only guess at the ingredients. Do you happen to have this recipe??

buffalodick said...

DogB- Again, not too bad!
Odat- Cheeseburger anything is OK with me!
Pink- Pizza? Friday night is acomin'.....
Kayla- Good to hear from you! I like Reuben soup too. I'll try and get my recipe over to you....

Uncle Buff is a cook AND an inventor!! Sounds like a great soup. I'll going to try to make it this weekend.

That is a soup????

[watches openmouthed]

A soup takes three hours to make???

But it really sounds so filling & hardly like an appetizer!

Akelamalu said...

Now you're just being kind and humouring me! :)

Sounds like a pretty good 'nail soup' recipe to me.
You ought to be franchising some of this stuff you know...

Stephanie Faris said...

Mmmm yummy! I like the name. The name would make me curious.

buffalodick said...

Mike- Use your own portions of the ingredients- I kept "touching it up" with tomato paste 'til I could taste it as a flavor.
Mona- It's what we would call a "hearty" soup- more of a lunch or supper meal rather than a course to a meal...
ake- No, really a mouthful-like the soup!
meredic- I'll ck out what "nail" soup is..
Steph- Contest is aways off, will ponder all the names that have come up!

Lynda said...

Oooh, it looks good. And sometimes soup isn't watery. Look at clam chowder. :)

I like the little hamburger patties, but that must be a lot of work!

I totally trust your judgement when you would tell me it tastes great, but I think it looks ehm... strange...
