Some Good Tasting Stuff Just Ain't Pretty!

As we had quite a bit of leftover steak, and I had been screwed out of my really good onion soup- I decided Monday to make a no-fail soup, steak and potato! Trimmed and cut steak into spoon sized bites, potatoes diced to about the same size, with beef broth, diced celery, diced onion, and sliced mushrooms- crock pot time! The seasonings added were minced garlic, black pepper, a bit of Canadian steak seasonings- on high for three hours... Then mixed in a flour/brown gravy mix/milk slurry that thickened it nicely! Served with rolls, we ate the heck out of it! Potatoes were not mushy, and steak was tender...a warming meal, even though it didn't snow like they said it would here!
Tonight, I have a steelhead fillet I plan to broil- post will be next!
Visited DogB's last post... Makes me feel like George Gobels- an old comedian once on Johnny Carson's show, between two famous icons in the entertainment business... He says; "Did you ever feel you were surrounded by people in tuxedos, and you were a pair of old brown shoes?" That's what my soup looks like against his fabulous meal!

Heck who cares if it did or didn't snow when you're serving up food like that! :)

lucky on the weather and more lucky with the soup.....hey and pretty is only a parsley sprig away.....

YUM. This sounds delicious. No snow, really? It looked like it was snowing last night in the Final Four coverage, and my husband reported (bitterly) that it was Sun. night.

It got cold here again, perfect time for your stew OR Sloppy Joe's (I mean, Tasty Thomas'???) What were they called?

Stew isn't supposed to be pretty ;)

That does look mighty tasty, though! Glad to see you guys are back on potatoes.

Looking good is over rated.

Ake- It hit the spot!
DogB- The difference between a bowling ball and parsley? If you get hungry enough, you can eat a bowling ball...
CDB- Untidy Josephs! Congrats on b-ball win!
Tavolini- Potatoes a-comin' Wife grabbed the last drop for work today!
K- I shoot for good flavor, worry about appearance later!

Nuffin better then homemade soup, the stuff out of tins is disgusting in comparison..... I love Stews to, and they aint the best looking of meals :)

Marmy- I go for the taste, and worry later about appearances.. hungry folks jump on good taste, snobs never start out hungry- that's why high end restaurants are so big on presentation...it's like being a bass lure! No flavor- just looks good!

parsley is good in so many things - as an ingredient! there is curly leaf and italian both with their merits! but you go ahead and enjoy that bowling ball.

DogB- It's a joke- go with it..

Hi there!

It looks like corned beef to me for some reason. In our country, our corned beef is mixed with potatoes and somehow ends up looking like that. Don't hit me LOL.

Soup looks delish!

Did you ever hear Gobels do his bit about falling out a hotel room window, naked? And then having to re-enter the hotel via the lobby, trying to appear casual? He stops to buy a paper, and the clerk gives him a "you look like you ain't got no money" look.

I still grin every time I think about it.

Yipe! Not Gobels (shades or Hermann), Gobel!

HalfC- Welcome to blog! We covered corned beef over here around St. Patricks Day! I love the stuff!

buffalodick said...

Mona- It really did taste better than it looked!
Emily- As DogB said- a little parsley would have made a nice contrast to the color...
Jeanne- His bit on the Carson show was a comic classic! "Lonesome George"...
Donna- Thanks! I'm not that mad about potatoes, but my wife will eat them raw, burnt, and anything in between!
Odat- Good to hear from you! Love that song you plug in on St. Pat's Day...
Deb- Long time no hear! Closed your blog to approved listeners only? Approve me!
StarB- I believe blogs are about the written word, but people like pictures!

buff it's open to all readers.

buffalodick said...

Kate- The smell was excellent, as was the flavor, but hard to make brown look good!

Why is it I never think to make these types of thing? I mean, all along I could have been making steak and potato soup but what do I do? Eventually, just throw the left over steak out.

Thanks for the idea!

buffalodick said...

Bina- Think of leftovers as ingredients- not just left-over...It's a fun game!

I've been told some of my food photos are gross.

I don't get it.

And to answer your question.. I made the Untidy Joseph's, exactly as you described, and they were fabulous! I had never made sloppy joe's from scratch like that, but they turned out REALLY great. Husband was IMpressed.

buffalodick said...

HalfC- It's up as of now!
Doc- My photos are better sometimes than other times..
CDB- Good! They're easy and tasty!

Looks good to me! I love soup in any shape form or fashion. Hubby does not like it if it is pureed, he wants the goods to look back at him :)

buffalodick said...

Chef- Some potato soups are pureed, and I don't like those either!

George Gobles and steak potato soup sounds like a perfect combination!
