Remember The First Time You Had Pound Cake?
Boy, I sure do! My mom was an indifferent cook, probably because my dad was an indifferent eater! However, coming from a Dutch family, she could bake with the best of them! Her recipes were hand-written, and a pinch of this, and a dab of that would actually be the instruction... One day, I came home from school to see a squat, bread shaped baked good I had never seen before.. "Mom! What did you bake?" "It's a pound cake, with lemon glaze". She had me at lemon- up until that moment, my favorite dessert was lemon meringue pie! It looked pretty plain, and my first bite was hesitant- but my eyes widened at the moist richness, and lemony flavor that assaulted my taste buds!
This cake can be made so many different ways, I won't even go into it. The original "pound cake" was just that- 1 pound of sugar, 1 pound of flour, 1 pound of eggs... most recipes aren't that far off from that, even though we add salt, baking powder, and flavorings... Today I made a Sour Cream Almond Pound cake... it will probably get topped with whipped cream!
Just got done, and have never been more disappointed in my life.. 6 eggs, 3cups of sugar, etc., my pound cake was a bust. Recipe off Internet, got to edible pieces out of a whole cake.. This is the second time I trusted some idiot who wrote down a recipe, and found it inedible! Shame on me- never again!
Tonight we also had a Midwest snack we call "Pigs in a blanket" .. a cooked sausage link, wrapped in a cresent roll and baked for about 10 minutes at 400F. Made 8, you saw the last one! Good stuff!

: ) Don't you have your mom's recipe?
go with your instincts buff - you should know better by now....gut feelings and a dab of this and that next time....what happened to it? Mushy? Hard like a brick?
Jen- No- mom didn't write down much..
DogB- Soggy.. caved in the middle- tasted OK, but what a mess..
Sorry about the pound cake buff, but I do love some blanketed pigs!
OH
MY
GOD
I think I love you Big Beaver
Pigs in a blanket :D some funny names you have there for your goodies :D
I love pound cake too But don't eat too much of it because of the calories! But mine turns out perfect and is a rage here!
we measure in grams & kilograms though...
And watch out for those recipes that call for a pinch of black powder! You'll blow your ass off!
MMMMMMM, cake.
My mom was a horrible cook. She got married when she was 16 though, so what can you expect (and surprisingly not because she was knocked up.)
I'm not such a hot "cook" either, baking is more my thing. I love sweets.
I've never had pound cake. :(
It's so annoying when a recipe doesn't work isn't it? What a shame you didn't get your mom's recipe. Pigs in blankets are sausages wrapped in bacon here.
What a drag to go to put that much effort in only to fail. I found a recipe (in a cookbook of county-fair winning recipes) for these peanut butter rice krispie treats with a ribbon of semi-sweet chocolate through the middle. It looked pretty simple, and I must have tried to reproduce it 4 or 5 times, till Bill finally said, "Enough!"
Really pisses me off that I couldn't make it turn out right....
Dana- Kind of retro, but take them to a party- and they get gone!
Beth- Cool little snack with a good mustard, aren't they?
Mona- I used cake flour instead of all purpose- it should have been better!
Rog- Baking powder?
Hoodie- I'd rather cook- more forgivng!
Ake- That sounds tasty, too!
Jeanne- we make those a lot, but chocolate goes on top like frosting- easier!
I don't bake but I am very fussy about pound cake! It's hard to find a good one, that's for sure.
Peace
Odat- I make good pound cake, and this one didn't come out... This so cheeses me off...
Pepperidge Farms actually makes a pretty good one.
So how many eggs are in a pound of eggs?
Doc- pound cake or "pigs"?
G-man- about 6 big ones...
My father loved keeping pound cake around, he had such good discipline when it came to a slice once a day, me I would eat it right up, if lemon was included...have you seen the new 'mummies in a blanket' they are making for halloween now? I like the traditional ones myself...
Yes, pound cake is good too...
sour cream almond pound cake. so dense andmoist...yum!
I've posted pound cake recipes. I promise they're good. My grandmother cooked with pinches, handfuls, and "cook until done." Hey, whatever works.
