God Bless The Folks Who Grow It, For Us Mere Mortals To Cook It!

My wife got an "Air Garden" for Christmas from my eldest.. she is currently growing chives, basil, and thyme.. It made me think how hard some folks work, bringing food to market, and all the time and effort in consumes. I am no farmer. I love to cook it when it's ready to be cooked! Meat, fruit, vegetables, spices, etc. are something us foodies must pay homage to- If it wasn't for them, well, anyone seen the movie "Soylent Green"? We give token thanks for our meal, praying without meaning it. Think about what I've written, and if you can't thank God, thank the farmer who raised or grew it..
Today, I made a meatloaf of home ground pork, ground chuck, and ground venison.. heavy on herbs and spices, I am expecting a good meatloaf! The from scratch scalloped potatoes with sour cream and parsley should match. You'd think I was Polish for my love of seasoned, sauteed mushrooms! The German Chocolate cake lets you know I can match food, that has never been next to each other!
Want to see a wonderful cartoon that foodies can smile and laugh at? "Ratatouille" is a cute cartoon with a message- "Anyone can cook"! Anyone can, if they want to...
P.S. If anyone didn't wish Mona a Happy Birthday, please do so now... She is drop dead cool and deserves yours blessings..

what an exotic meat loaf with the venison...wow...

did you know that 'german chocolate' is a brand named after the guy who invented it...a brand of chocolate bar called "German's" which had been developed
in 1852, by an Englishman named Sam German, for Baker's Chocolate Company. I give thanks to Sam German since this is my all time favorite cake.

You are funny Buff- I was not really complaining, I ate his bowl of pasta anyway! my engineer hubby gets railroaded at work because he cannot say no to the last minute work load, projects and trips he is not even in charge of. I just dropped him off at the airport and I wish I was eating at your house! I clean for food...

What is that thing in the middle with green looking things on it? The air garden thing your wife got?

DogB- Not a bad mix today!
ChefE- Basil, chives, and thyme she hasn't killed it, and is happy!
Doc- Oops! They will get killed the next game...by either...

With either mustard, catsup, or mayo!

Interesting.

I've made it with a mix of beef, pork and lamb, but never tried venison.

That last line was knock off cool! Thanks Buf! I am so touched!

Yes, indeed. I have seen people growing things in tea cups too ( visit Foodie's hope , the link is 'Asha' on my blog) and you will see these amazing pictures of her kitchen garden that she grows things she requires fresh! Some of them are Indian herbs that are not found in America!

yes, we have to thank the farmer who produced crop for us. ( My grace always includes that thanks :))

Your table is always so interesting, I can almost smell food up till here! :)

Your post made me hungry. I think I'm motivated to step up the cooking tonight.

I wondered over from Fawty. Like the blog.

G-man- Probably tonights supper!
Jeanne- My usual meatloaf would have beef, pork, lamb or veal. Vensisons low fat content, coupled with the fact I ground my own pork- really made this stand out!
Mona- I imagine this will be the most expensive chives, basil, and thyme ever made! Better than a Chia pet, though! :)
K- Welcome to the blog! I'll check yours out next!

One hellva meatloaf!

buffalodick said...

Tavolini- The meatloaf was really amazing...
Rog- I converted a "You killed Bambi" person into "Another piece, please!"...

Looks good. I just hope you used equal parts of the ground meat, as I know from experience that Venison is VERY lean.

It was all looking so good until you put that diet Coke in the line-up.

Lisa and I really enjoyed Ratatouille". The animators definitely did their homework on that one.

I'm not a fan of the meatloaf, but yours doesn't sound too bad...

I love the fact that the largest supermarket chain here in Britain print pictures and little stories of the farmers on their produce. How cool is that?

buffalodick said...

Heff- That's exactly the blend..
Jeff- Wasn't my Diet Coke!
Finn- Came out firm but moist...
Belle- A lot is grown here, but the winter stuff is South and Central American- and a lot of Americans don't like it!

I get my beef and pork from a farm just down the road where they rear their own. I can't bring myself to see the animals in the field though so I have them deliver! :)

Ake- It's OK, but it is good to remember what goes into what we enjoy, and sustains us, isn't it?

Hi...
I think you are very much interested in cooking...

LOL...I had to look closer at the herb garden, at first I thought it was green eggs! (was looking for the ham).

What I want to know is where do you keep all this cooking "equipment"???

Peace

Me too Buff- I have a problem with space in my condo right now, So I have a make shift catering closet and 'kitchen' corner...why is it when we get older we buy houses with lots of space, but then we eventually do not cook anymore, and hit the blue bird specials, lol

buffalodick said...

FeminS- I guess you could say that...!
Odat- One whole closet is the small appliances, the mixer and food processor are on a far counter- out all the time, the big pots are where I can fit them!
Chef- When we redid our kitchen, I threw out, or gave away anything I hadn't used in 5 yrs.!

the best thing about all those pictures????? THE DIET COKE!!!! Ya baby!!!

buffalodick said...

Beth- I think Diet Pepsi is way better, but we buy what's on sale! Either one with vodka is called a "Skinny Elephant"!!!

I am *so* coveting your wife's air garden. I want one, but lack the space.

Since moving to South Dakota, I finally see how much work goes into killing stuff and then butchering it and then grinding it. And the corn? And the weather that makes farmer's bananaz? Yep. I get to see it every day now.

buffalodick said...

UrbanV- She loves it, and hasn't killed a single thing yet!
Kate- Reality is something most folks don't get first hand.. You know what really goes on!

Helene said...

very cool the air garden.. my husband has wanted a hydroponic one for years now... someday I bet he has it... but knowing him it will be in a huge greenhouse in our yard! lol

I am not at all a fan of meatloaf. I know... can I even be American??? lol Is that cornbread up there?? I do love cornbread... and scalloped spuds... omg yum!

At the moment I am dieting so there is none of that happening in my neck of the woods! lol
Mom diets, the house diets!

oh and HBD to Mona!

buffalodick said...

Helene- No corn bread- that was a german chocolate cake!

Chef E said...

Buff- I think we need a 'micro' growth update on the herbs...

Also you can mail me some of that saffron you have :)

buffalodick said...

ChefE- One plant has some kind of brown going on, other two are OK.. I gave that saffron to a friend and local chef, who I thought was going to start crying!

I love that. I put finely chopped green pepper in my meatloaf. It gives it such a great flavor!!!
