Beef Jerky And A Long Cold Day In Michigan..

Yesterday, I sliced and marinated some 5lbs. of beef eye of round, that was on it's way to becoming a common treat around here called beef jerky... Normally, I cut it with the grain of meat- to make it chewier..but being lazy, I decided for a more edible product this time, and went across grain. Came out plenty chewy, and took the marinate flavor(Worcester, soy sauce, brown sugar, red pepper, black pepper, garlic, onion, liquid smoke, and sea salt!)really well!
My wife is working long hours, so I made up a plate of those pigs in a blanket for her to munch on when she gets home! Weather is so cold and snowy, letting the Airedale out is easier- I just open the door, out she sprints, she pees and poops- and comes runnin' for the warmth of the house! Reminds me of a joke...
Woman buys a parrot and finds out the bird has been taught quite a few cuss words... complains to the pet store owner, who says "Just stick him in the freezer for a bit when he swears, and he'll quit cussing soon enough".. Woman says to bird "Polly want a cracker?" Bird says "Fu*k you and your cracker"... She grabs the bird and sticks him in the freezer.. Bird looks to the right of him and sees a frozen turkey.. "Jebus buddy! What did you say to the bitch?"...

Ya know. I do indeed have a dehydrater, but I like using the oven.
Either way, you just saved yourself a TON of money!

: ))) Thanks, I needed a joke right about now.

That is my dad's favourite joke.
Having a husband who doesn't know how to boil an egg (no I'm not joking) makes me wonder where I went wrong..

p.s. Have you heard of South African Biltong? I couldn't live without it. Very similar to jerky.

you season yours up quite a bit - I go for salt and pepper maybe dried chile (rarely) I like the 'meat' flavor....I would love to try one of those piggies....do you dip them in mustard?

G-man- That thing has paid for itself a dozen times over!
Dana- Wife didn't get home from work until 930PM- so I had a snack ready for her!
Jen- Most of my jokes are old, but you're young enough not to have heard them!
Belle- I must know 4 parrot jokes!
Biltong was one of jerkys earliest forms..
Dogb- Mustard is what I like..Wife eats them plain- the Airedale takes them any way she can get them!

LOL--I like the joke :)

Pigs in a blanket sounds just about right. I'd probably dip mine in ketchup, of course!

The boys around here make deer jerky all the time. And it's always too spicy. I think I could learn to like it if they made it edible.

Lini- BB-Q sauce, Horeradish and mayo, etc... what ever you like!
Beth- I've done that for my family to a point where they expect it more than appreciate it, but it's all good..
Mona- The joke was an oldie but a goodie...
Ake- Spread the laughs- the world need them!
Kate- This is a pretty lively batch too!

My husband will do almost anything for pigs in the blanket - they're his favorite.

DogB- Guys gotta stick up for other married men, if we are to survive as a species...
Odat- Oldie but still funny! Kinda like us!
Snowniece- The food deals around Super Bowl are pretty good!
K- I didn't make them for years, but lately we're on a streak with them! Grew up on the darn things at church pot lucks!

I complain about the cold in Philly but it is summer here compared to Michigan. Stay warm.

buffalodick said...

UrbanV- Well, you got one cat who probably appreciates being indoors now!

Being a Dutchy I've never been able to grasp the whole beef jerky thing.. my skin crawls just thinking about it... (although I am sure that IF I liked it the one you make is awesome, LOL)

We do a lot of cooking when they are gone don't we...if mine does not come home I am liquidating some assets and buying the market, would be cheaper than me shopping there...

I have not make jerky, I found a recipe for salmon jerky, may try some with what I brined, have you done that with a blowing fan?

Love the joke, have not heard that one in a while...

buffalodick said...

Chef- My dehydrator has a fan, which speeds up everything in it. A convection oven on low temp might work too, but my smoked salmon is usually done outside in one of my smokers!

deb said...

yep we made the dogs in a blanket. Megan devoured a total of 12. I'd love to eat like that again. It all goes straight to the thighs. The left one to be exact.

Happy Tuesday.
