Labor Day Eats- Grill Summer Goodness!

We usually have a bit of a large meal on Labor Day- usually a grill and charcoal are involved! I like company that day, and this year it was my youngest son Craig, with girlfriend in tow.. She had to work today, so dinner was early- noonish. I cooked a bunch for Saturday, so I wasn't looking to recreate the wheel, just have a good simple meal, done well!
Menu was T-bone steaks, seasoned with Canadian Steak Seasoning, and rubbed with Worcestershire sauce, charcoaled to medium as shown. Next, fresh corn on the cob, steamed until done- but crisp! I bought those dinner rolls, and paid more than normal, only because they were fresh, soft, and fragrant... Dessert was lemon bars. a little retro- but welcome to the Midwest! All got gone, and now have the rest of the day to relax..
The weather today was beautiful, if a bit warm... The grocery store was not busy when I went(early!), and that is nice. The checkout people and baggers were sullen, as they had to work..I even tried to cheer them up- to no avail!
An article in our newspaper- Headline read: "Women make up half the workforce in depressed Michigan"... A couple of reasons being, that's how many guys are out of work, and employers take advantage of women, because they settle for less pay than a guy! Working women, know your worth! Happy Labor Day!

Oh, crap. Now I have to make lemon bars, because I want them. Glad you had good weather. Our sky is sullen, and we have yet to reach 65 degrees. Happy end of Summer, Buff!

G-man- So tart... I love sour and sweet mixed together!
Marjie- Like falling-off-a-log easy for you! I like 65F, gray is my favorite color- living in Michigan!

Yeah for good, Midwestern food! Our party last night was a hit - and I didn't even get any of my own beef. Hrmph! And even though I'm wildly afraid of the grill, I gave it a whirl and didn't do too badly. Yesterday, as my beef was cooking, I was reading The Accidental Vegetarian. The juxtaposition of those two things was hilarious to me. Happy Labor Day!

Ake- A Monday Holiday has always been odd.. I wish it was on Fridays!
Kate- That's like being at a KKK meeting, reading "Black Like Me"!!!!
Pretty funny!

I have not had a t-bone in several hundred years - not the most popular cut around NYC - the porter house rules that roost - they say that on a t-bone the tenderloin is on the left and on a porter house its on the right - what happens if you flip them over? - dang I could sure go for one now and yours look perfect!

The steaks look great. I make it a challenge to cheer up staff like that when the same down. Speak to them by name, smile, ask how they're doing, etc. Usually it works, but yeah, sometimes people just want to be miserable!

DogB- Went to store to buy Porterhouse- ones on sale were loin cut(no bone, but no tenderloin!) I checked and the T-bones looked better by far! Huge piece of tenderloin on all.. They were great!
Chris- Selling for 30 some years, I learned ways to get along with a pitbull with a toothache! It was early, and they weren't chipper about their lot in life right then...

Marmy- I know you have as many or more Holidays than America! I wish they would move it to Friday- for the laborers to have a better week-end!

So....lemon bars are among my favorite foods (they count as a food right??) in the whole world!I once said I could live off lemon bars and noodles with butter and parmesan cheese.

Interesting newspaper article. We need more men like you in the world who appreciate a woman's worth!

Glad you had such a great weekend! You deserve it for sure ;)

Just telling it like it is said...

I love lemon bars by the way...
Yeah women know your worth...What the heck? somethings got to change around there ;)

buffalodick said...

Rachel- The lemon bars needed three eggs, but two of mine were double-yolkers! 5 yolks made them rich and had more protein, so I guess they are a food!
Darngirl- It's a changing world, but sometimes the change is done to you, instead of for you!

Yummm... T-bone steaks... Delicious!!! Everything!

buffalodick said...

Talita- Thanks! Everybody! Go over and see the killer strawberry muffins, this cook made- in three languages, no less! Don't come back until you do!

buffalodick said...

A T-bone steak sounds fabulous right now.

Hope you had a great labor day.

buffalodick said...

Gene- They were really that good! Thanks!
T-Blonde- That's what I'm talkin' about! I like women who know their stuff, and aren't afraid to show it!
T-Good- Rolls are gone! About three lemon bars left....

I actually had to perform LABOR on labor day. Didn't cook a damn thing.

PISSER.

buffalodick said...

K- I normally don't buy that cut, but with that much tenderloin attached- I couldn't resist! Hope your day was fun-filled, too!

buffalodick said...

Heff- That's about a bitch... I hope somebody fed your Hard-Workin', Labor Producin', All-American Workin' Man face! That Bud was fer you...

Lemon bars -- scratch or box?

Hit 40 said...

Women also have a lot of service jobs that we can not do without...

nurses, teachers, ... You get the idea.

Just telling it like it is said...

yeap your right about that...

buffalodick said...

Jeanne- Box, with modifications!
Hit40- In Michigan the "traditional" jobs professional women hold-doctors lawyers, teachers, etc. are good fields to be in nowadays! Loss of Mfg. here has caused trickle down job losses in restaurants, retail stores, and many others.. Women have gone to work at jobs they normally wouldn't take(teen-age jobs!) to survive.
Darngirl- It's a strange economy in Michigan. I read yesterday after 160 years, the Michigan State Fair will not go on in 2010... budget cuts from our idiot Governor- Jennifer Grandholm!

Great job on the labor day feast. looks great!

buffalodick said...

Kris- Welcome! Thanks! It was a simpler meal than some, but perfect for the day...

Jamie said...

Sounds fab to me, Midwest or not. Yum, love them lemon bars, after, of course, the steak and the corn on the cob.

Thanks for the support for women standing up for their worth!

buffalodick said...

Jamie- Women get the compliments and credit they deserve here! I rip on them when all they know how to do is bitch about men! We are different! I am glad we are!

Canadian Steak Seasoning, huh? I'll have to hunt around for that!

What I really could go for right now (after my chicken soup...I'm sick!) are some lemon bars. Two of those with some tea would make make my day.

PS - I'll be on the lookout for the t-shirt. THANK YOU, Mr. Buf!!! :)

buffalodick said...

Scarlet- Hope you feel better soon, and shirt is on it's way... I'll bet it will make you a great night shirt- it's huge! Hope hubby isn't large enough to wear it, and gets mad at me!
