The Buffalo Bros. At The State BBQ Contest....

Well, we've done better. Potatoes 4th, Beans 6th, Dessert 6th, all other catagories ranged from 10th to 34th! 42 teams, 40 KCBS Certified judges! We're looking at scores that showed presentation was rated far higher than ever before, and certain judges who were so harsh, they won't be asked back to judge again. The two top teams must have gotten a dozen ribbons between them, and for only the 2nd time in our lives-we got skunked! All our catagories were good-no screwups. My one team member was drinking all night, and missed the first 2 meat catagories(me and other guy did them). We beat some teams overall that are quite good, so I'm sure comments will be made to KCBS. Oh yeah, in was a downpour from 6-10am, after a very chilly night of cooking! When I'm wearing my leather winter jacket at 11am in July in Michigan-well, you get the picture! Already planning our strategies for next year.....

Sorry to hear you were a little dissapointed.
I could have done with an expert here last night when 40 hungry scouts turned up on the mountain. None went unfed though and all had a good time.

DutchB- Where do I start with you? I found my winter coat in my trunk and survived the night! Leather pants on guys in the States pretty much means you're a big fan of The Village People! Leather pants on women means it came with a free whip....

mededic- Glad the Scouts had fun! Went over all scoring and it looked like we just got the toughest judges- both of the local head judges let me know they had their hands full with table judges that needed further training...

That sucks! Why did you guys get the toughest judges?! I guess there's always next year, right?

I cant even imagine it being cold! lol Its sooooooo hot right now! lol As for men in leather... ummmm makes me think of a biker not a homosexual! =]

I think that if your presentation wasnt the best, that was probably the bit that you didnt focus on... so it gives you room for improvement AND might just lead you to top marks next time. Its good sometimes to be shaken up a bit... get the juices flowing and your desire to win even greater! Dont get mad... get even! lol

I bet you guys still had a ball! You should post photos!

And I still cant imagine what you can do to baked beans that could get you 6th place! lol THAT is a feat! =]

What was the meat... did I miss that bit? I'll go peek at your past posts to see...

Jen- Luck of the draw(or unluck!)
Kate- Bikers wear chaps, not Rod Stewart leather leotards. I am a certified judge of KCBS BBQ contests, and I know as much about presentation as anyone. Our baked beans were on for 3 hrs, and we added BBQ sauce, molasses, bacon and some renderings, polish ham, and Kracki!Meats were chicken, pulled pork, pork ribs, and beef brisket.

I have some of those pants and they DO come with a whip! lol!!!

It sounds like a bunch of stuffy judges to me too! Especially when your wares have placed so much better before--what a disappointment. I hate to blame the judges in a contest, but I tend to lean in that direction in this case.

It's such a shame you had bad weather!! We were gorgeous all weekend but I've been stuck inside and I would have been willing to trade in your guy's case!

For DoggyB and Sornie-
Chicken-olive oil / lemon/pepper/ vinegar marinade, then dusted with dry rub before going on grill. All thighs. Glazed in a BBQ sauce over direct heat. Skin removed, plannned to crisp and put back on, ran out of time.. Placed low-no crisp skin.
Beef Brisket-soaked in Worstershire sauce, heavily coated with dry rub and beef finishing sauce ,set for 4hrs. Smoked for 5hrs, wrapped & cooked for 6 more.Rested 30 min. sliced. Came out great, only in top 1/3.
Pulled pork- Boston butt(huge)mustard slather, dry rubbed 6hrs unwrapped, 6hrs wrapped, torn up, mixed w/sauce and white vinegar-middle of the pack in judging(came out great!).
Pork ribs- mustard slather, dry rub, set 8 hrs, on 4 hrs. Basted. Tender and good flavor, glazed w/BBQ finishing sauce, finished top 2/3.

Thanks for the cooking tips, I'll have to try them and congrats on the outcome of the contest. Have you ever competed in any contests of this type and run across a restaurant by the name of "Piggy Blues"?

ugh, everyone wants to be a tough judge when it comes to food. it's like...trendy or something. ANYWAY, i still want those potatoes. 4th place or 34th place. congrats!

Sounds yummy. That's the kind of competition I need to judge!

you need to get your mojo back...

sornie- Nope, haven't heard of them!
Pink-Went over results for everyone
and a perfect score is 180. Normally this is hard to attain, but 170+ usually will win a meat category. In our contest no one got as high as 170!
Stephanie- Welcome to the blog! We tend to talk food alot!
Tanya- Some days it's just not your turn!
DogB- You hit it on the money!

I still think I should be asked to judge. ;)
