Whole New York Strip Loin , Cut To Your Liking..

You know how? You buy one on sale, and cut it up yourself! I bought a close to 7.8lb. cyropacked boneless NY strip loin, cut it into various sized steaks, and one small roast- all hand cut and trimmed by me... That pile of meat you are looking at in the photo only cost $27.14! One skinny one will be pan fried for son today in the form of two steak sandwiches, three of the less attractive ones will become Monday's steak and potato soup, and the rest will be frozen.
Friday we were out of town, and Saturday wife worked and I was sick, so lack of food posts hopefully explained..

I just did that about a month ago, bought the loin but I had the butcher cut it up. I didn't get as good a deal on price as you, but I was happy with the purchase.

The possibilities of that slab of meat are endless!

Medium well.... I'll be there in 2 hours!

I love grilling whole loins and cutting medallions of beef at the table.

Great money saving tip

RLM- My favorite is rib-eye, but it was double the price..
Highlander- It needed a lot of trimming, and was more work than usual...
Jules- Exactly why I like to cut it up my self!
G-man- Almost warm enough to grill- but not in the wind and rain!

buffalodick said...

Griller- If I had a crowd big enough, I'd to the whole thing too!

That's definitely the way to save money!

Excellent! I always buy meats whole and do the cutting myself, it's a lot cheaper than regular price even when not on sale.

buffalodick said...

BlueV- I mainly do it to end up with what I want!
Martha- Absolutely!

I buy whole cryovac sections of meat, and my restaurant supply house has a butcher shop that cuts them for me. It is the best meat deal, hands down!

I've never done this with steaks, but I love cutting up pork loins into perfect boneless chops.

Great price and needed a lot of trimming? Would that happen to be packed by National Beef Packing Company?

Larry (Big Dude) and I both got whole strips from them this fall for a great price but both of ours need a lot of trimming. It was still worth the price and you got yours about $.50 less a pound so you really did well!

That's the same price you'd pay for only one, or maybe two steaks in a restaurant.

I'm hungry now. Hope you're feeling better.

Finally! Someone else who does that! I'm not so crazy after all! ;)

Hope you're feeling better soon!!

What a great tip - I love buying in bulk to save $$ and this price is great! Thanks!

Sorry you weren't feeling well yesterday- hope your wife doesn't get whatever you had!

Used to buy this way when I had a big family to feed. Now I just apply same method on a much smaller scale to chicken, turkey etc. Much cheaper to cut up yourself.

That is not a bad price for all of that!!!!!!

DogB- I'm making steak vegetable soup today!
Marjie- I kinda figured you would know this!
Pam- Same thing, only bigger..
Chris- Probably. I found it easier to cut the steaks and trim them separately..
Jeff- It's why I don't mind taking two and making steak vegetable soup with them!
Momster- I am feeling better, but no fireball for three days...
Stacy- I'm finding a lot of us on these blogs know about this!
Vic- More work, but worth it!
Barb- We don't do as much of this as when boys were around, but it get used, believe me!
otin- I've paid more than that for two steaks from a butcher before!
Brian- Wife at play downtown, so I watched football by myself with a bologna and cheese sandwich!
JST- BB-Q sounds good to me right now!
KB- Wish I could get deals on lamb like that! Bet you can...
Ily- Wusthof! Expensive! Buy them on sale!

This just in. My boyfriend informed me last night that he wanted to pick up a tenderloin today and cut it up himself. Now the possibilities are endless for us too!

Dutchie- Long time no hear! Hope all is well with you..
Jules- Cut up, whole, or partially cut up- you save money and you get what you want!

Wusthof? Is that a long way of saying WTF? I haven't heard of them, but I'll check them out, thanks! :)

buffalodick said...

Ily- Wusthof or Heinkel, both made in Germany..Willliams-Sonoma carries them. Both have cheaper knife sets made in Spain- same steel chemistry, but not as well made...

You can tell you are a foodie :-) I love getting a big cut of good meat and then breaking it down into multiple packages to freeze. I always feel so productive- Actually. my husband cuts it and I bag it.
Lots of good recipes are going to come from that great piece of meat. Looking forward to it.

Pam said...

Great idea. I'm having one of those "Why didn't I think of that?" moments. Hope everyone is feeling better!
Pam

buffalodick said...

Gloria- Thanks for the kind thoughts, hope you feel better soon, too!
Velva- It does make you feel more in control, than just picking out meat!
Gypsy- The savings are great, but you can hand trim thin or thick, leave enough for a roast, etc. which is the fun part!

We have a restaurant wholesaler not far, but I have no freezer space since the cafe is gone, so I am at the mercy of my butcher friend at the local market, but he throws deals my way here and there. I have to go into Philly to get my wild game, but its worth the cheap price and trip...I turned down a pork sandwich to save up my calories, and now I want a steak, darn you!

Feel better...

pinknest said...

Um...WOW.

buffalodick said...

Chef- Everything is a trade off- and I can't drive 55!!!
Pink- A large pile of steak is primal and tempting, isn't it?

Buffalo, finally bought the side of beef at Costco. Had to bring my wagon to haul it out. Will be cutting today. Let ya know how it goes.
