The Cookie Inspired Mini-Meme!

Lately, I have found I am reading more... well heck! I call them Food Blogs..these people are far more than just good cooks, they are intelligent, knowledgeable, and interesting at many levels beyond feeding family and friends! I never fail to learn something new everyday, by reading your well-written posts...
The way we all can learn new and interesting stuff, is by sharing the information we collectively have gathered, with each other. Big world out there, most of us will never meet in person! I have learned by reading Paul Kirk, an award-winning cook and author on BB-Q, but I have also learned things about this subject from Chris, who comments on my blog, and worships something called a Green Egg...(just kiddin', bud!) Doggy Bloggie... I have learned many innovative cooking techniques from him, and facts about foods I have heard of, but never prepared! I don't know if my friend and ally in cooking is obsessed, or possessed, as he is passionate about food, and it's preparation! G-man can cook like a guy with the best of them! Heff just did a outdoor cooked Pork Nuclear Weapon- go see it! Ladies, you are next! Darn good cooks I respect; Marjie, Marmie, Donna, and her more reserved(wouldn't take much, Donna!)sister Denise, Katherine, Tavolini, Pinknest, Over40, My adopted blogniece Snow Elf has gotten the cooking bug, ChefE, and our very own favorite vegan (soon to be published!), Urban Vegan, and really too many to name- but you know who you are, and don't feel slighted if you didn't see your name! Stay with me, all of this rambling is leading to a point!
A Cookie Mini-Meme!
1. What is your hands down favorite cookie? Elaborate, or share the recipe, if you wish..
2. What cookie do you dislike the most? Comments about overcooked, undercooked, burned, or raw, are permissible... I'll go first, to inspire the newbies to my blog..
1. Favorite? Toll House Chocolate Chip... When done right, they are simple and, arguably, the most popular cookie in America... with a hint of cinnamon in the batter- Heaven!
2. Any cookie that uses those damn butterscotch flavored chips! Overly sweet, with the most artificial flavor you can imagine- they suck! My preferred substitute is Heath bar bits- chewy, good flavor, and a nice texture in a cookie...My wife eats raw cookie dough- how many of you do this too? Blucka! Burned cookies should never go anywhere but from the oven to the trash bin...
Have fun with this today! I plan to learn something about cookies or you, or both, so get busy!
We are headed up to our place in the woods, hit a casino or two, and watch a couple of movies we rented... see you all when I get back!
P.S-I am attempting to make a zucchini/eggplant/pasta casserole tonight... using the liquids from the veggies and tomatoes to soften and cook the pasta.. New techniques are how we learn, too!

Let me just say that I so enjoy your mini-memes ... even if I'm not a food blogger!

1. What is your hands down favorite cookie?

Oatmeal raisin - no contest! But they must be chewy, not crunchy, and the raisins must be soaked so that they remain plump and juicy!

2. What cookie do you dislike the most?

Macaroons. Icky, overly sweet, grainy coconut in a cookie? BLECH!

Dana- Perfect participation! My blog's name has Opinions in it! I want to hear thoughts, other than my own.. I hear my own opinions bouncing around like Pac-man in my head- all day and night! :)

Marjie said...

Favorite cookie: Meringue kisses - my recipe is at http://moderndayozzieandharriet.blogspot.com/2008/11/kisses-kisses-kisses.html

Least favorite cookie: anything involving chocolate. burned gets put down the garbage disposal.

but you know I don't make cookies much. When everyone's home, 20 dozen is a good start. I get tired just thinking about that!

Butterscotch flavored chips sound VILE... and not just cause I don't like butterscotch, it just sounds so... FAKE and OVERLY RICH, you know? Ugh.

Stacy Uncorked said...

I can't stand butterscotch flavored chips...

I do, however, concur with Dana - Oatmeal raisin are my favorite, and yes, they need to be chewy, not crunchy. :)

If you're going to do this next week, I would love to play along! :)

Marjie- As I understand you have to cook for a mob,but I bet someday you will enjoy baking a few treats for the hordes of grandchildren coming your way!
Lilu- Thank-you for believing... I did not embellish this- they really do suck!
Stacy- Welcome to my blog! I try to do a mini-meme about once a month-, people love these things- when they don't take up half your life!

I cant help it and I have to say it - I like all the girls cookies- least favorite has to be peanut butter - just seeing those fork tines from a distance is enough to keep me away.

G-man- I like Molasses cookies too, but you don't see them much..
StarB- I like coconut, but a lot of people hate it!
Mona- Wow! I bet you are the only person that says that on this post!

Okay - I know this is totally unoriginal, but my mom's chocolate chip cookie receipe is the best in the world.

She makes her cookies with shortening (not exactly health food I know) and they are fabulous.

How was the casserole??????

sounds yummy.

I love how you're always trying new things and then reporting back to us. You've helped shaped many of my meals. I know I don't inspire you (and that's okay, I'm not gifted in cooking!)...but you inspire me!

Btw, I love those peanut butter cookies with the hershey's kiss in the middle. They're my absolute favorite! What I don't like are bar cookies. They tend to be too hard and crunchy...and I prefer soft and gooey.

Hope you had a great trip! "See" you when you get back! :)

ChefE- I call them O.P. cookies- the O.P. stands for Other Peoples! I hint to all: A bite sized treat edible without utensils is nearly always a big hit at the picnic/potluck affairs we all have to attend!
Donna- Not to be a chauvinist pig, but the fairer sex seems to prefer a more complex, elegant cookie.. Guys just want them free, fresh, and in large quanities!
K- I use butter flavored Crisco to grease my preheated cookie sheets- and I certainly have had excellent cookies made with shortening! You ought to try real animal lard in pastries sometime.. sounds gross but the best for a light layered texture...
VodkaM- It worked like mad! Soupy at first, when bubbling it softened, cooked the pasta(which absorbed the excess liquid great!) quite well... I plan to do a post. When I find a time saving technique that gives away no quality- I share!
Scarlet- You have a neat way of writing, and telling your stories- You do indeed inspire me! We all need upbeat people in our lives, and that is your gift, dear...
P.S...I mean P.B- and chocolate! A classic taste match for treats!

I was SOOOO disappointed not to see my name in this post. I guess two recipes in eight months (one of them belonging to My Life Requires Alcohol) doesn't qualify the Raisin Chronicles as a food blog.

Your total disrespect for my gastronomic ability (disability?) notwithstanding, I have a cookie recipe that I've made for over 35 years, much beloved by my daughter. I found it in a book of county-fair winning recipes my dad gave me when I got married (at age 18). The cookies are a simple roll-out butter cookie. The trick is the icing, which starts out as buttercream icing, but all liquids are replaced by freshly squeezed lemon juice, with the pulp left in. At first glance they appear to be sugar cookies with bland vanilla frosting, which is what makes watching people's faces when they bite into them so enjoyable.

A bit like my blog, really....

Raisin- My Dear Old Dried Up Grape, or do you prefer Raisin...(Funny, or what?!!?) I knew there would be one sour grape(see where this is going?) in the bunch about me not acknowledging them and their ability to bake/cook... Oh Heck! You know I'm kidding! Lemon flavor in cookies/pies/cakes is a personal favorite... I'd be a happy guy if you would post, or E-mail me the recipe. I know you have my E-mail address, as you have stalked me before... HeeHeeHee...
With Love, The Buff
P.S. I was sent back here by God Hisself to annoy fine, upstanding people such as yourself... He says it keeps them on their toes...

Best cookies are peanut butter! Warm with a big glass of cold milk! Smashed down with a fork to make the # pattern!

Worst cookies...anything sugar free or that contain persimmons.

buffalodick said...

Gene- I like peanut butter cookies, but who got up in the morning and put persimmons in baked goods? Sugar free just confuses me...

Just telling it like it is said...

and I learn from the lessons of the stories of your life...hopefully you get a laugh when you read my blog;)

1. chocolate chip - the oldies are the best
2.Jammy Dodgers - do you have those over there? Rubbish! Only fit for children's parties where you don't want them to eat too much junk

buffalodick said...

Hit40- Nice to know, but answer the damn question! You are speaking "womenese" again... Womenese? It's when you say something another woman understands exactly what you're saying, and a guy doesn't....
MillyH- Welcome to the blog! I want to hate the cookie you hate- but I don't know what it is! This is the part where you teach me something I don't know...

Excellent choice of meme, and I couldn't agree with you more about the butterscotch!!

Favorite cookies--Target Cookies
This is my grandma's recipe, and they are a bit tricky to make. She made hundreds and hundreds of cookies every year at Christmas for all of our families. I really miss her and those cookies!

Target Cookies
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. peanut butter (chunky)
1 egg, beaten
2 T. milk
1 1/4 c. flour
1/2 t. salt
1/2 t. soda
6 oz. chocolate chips

Cream shortening and sugar until light, beat in peanut butter, egg and milk. Sift together flour, salt and soda; stir into creamed mixture. Place dough on lightly floured wax paper. Roll our 15x8x1/4 in rectangle.

Melt chocolate in double boiler, cool and spread over dough. Roll like a jellyroll, chill, and slice. Don't chill for too long!
Bake 375 for 8-10 minutes.

Least favorite--its not really a cookie, but I HATE divinity. Ugh :P

buffalodick said...

KB- Casserole post will be up in an hour!
Tavolini- Cookie sounds great! I remember as a kid my late mother's ladies church group would all make a batch of cookies at home. They would then make trays of all the cookies brought for all of them to take home. Gimme that old time religion!

I love the same cookies you do, but, I must say my FAVORITE is the no-bake oatmeal cookies. Just sugar, milk and butter boiled with peanut butter, oatmeal and vanilla added is so freaking yummy! I don't make them often cause then I eat the heck out of them! LOL

There aren't a lot of cookies I DO like. I would say the two mentioned here, is about it. I don't like any strange tasting stuff, no crunchy cookies, AT ALL. No burnt or raw cookies. No ... what is that liquor people put in cookies? YUK!

Yea, I'm very picky.

buffalodick said...

Bina- You are so cute, you can get away with picky! So happy you got together with your dear friend, Beth- I know you two would be a pair to draw to!
