Famous Pairs, Fred and Ginger, George and Gracie, Scalloped Potatoes and Ham!

I always loved those cheesy musicals that showcased the dancing talents of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, and I always loved watching George and Gracie Burns, with their straight lady/ funny man skits... there is magic in what a good couple can accomplish!
That being said, one of the simplest meals you could prepare, and find difficult to improve on, would be scalloped potatoes and ham! White sauce and fresh potatoes cooked properly, are a spud lovers delight! Ham, with it's salty, distinctive flavour, is a perfect foil to the rich, creamy, starchy potato... I do add spices and herbs to my white sauce, such as parsley, black pepper, salt, onions, and garlic. My wife loves potatoes- me, not near as much.. but this pairing with ham always satisfies, and is really inexpensive! Kind of retro, but I get that way around the Holidays..

Ah, memories. Of course our au gratin was from a box, but I loved it anyway.

this makes more sense - I always try and get all creative and mix the ham in with the spuds and it dont seem to work right - two simple things side by side is better!

I am so going to have to make some of that this weekend.

I haven't had that combo in the longest time.

Yum!

PrePon- We hadn't had it for a bit either- sounded and tasted just right!

Hey Buff...I had to take my son on a MAJOR shopping spree tonight, just so I would have my tators and pig while I am here...you are right I hate those competitive shows, and also was in contest that really, were nothing more than popularity contest...this is the real deal :)

darngirl- Definitely a sight to see!
ChefE- I've been in many contests where the fix was in, but quite a few that were on the up and up!

I could make that! And I would LOVE it! But, I don't know HOW to make white sauce!

Bina- white sauce is butter, with flour, until blended, milk, and those spices... You let it thicken-then, poured over sliced potatoes... don't go nuts on overheating- and you have white sauce!

Must have had this same meal a hundred times growing up. As you said, a great combination.

Jeff- Ham, as in a piece of ham, not deli slices- is like the lost meal in America!

This morning Buff- My son got some thick cut bacon, over easy eggs and pan toast (as in no toaster in the house), and I am in pig heaven this morning(hubby does not like the smell, so I have to cook it when he is not around)!

Chef- I saw the picture, you're a good cook and a good mom!

LOVE fried potatoes and the smell of toast in the morning. I would love it even better if I wasn't the one having to make it.

You know--I've never made scalloped potatoes before. But--I happen to have milk, potatoes, cheese and breadcrumbs...

Thank you for inspiring!

Tanya- these are simple, and potatoes are something I can make well, but don't really care for!
Lini- Milk, butter, and flour, with spices- and you have a sauce!
