Mini-Meme Time.. Far Away Places...

Although I have traveled quite a bit, I have never needed a passport. I have been to Cananda numerous times, sightseeing, and fishing!I have also seen alot of places in the USA, but never further.. National Geographic has been a must read since I was 12 years old. People, cultures, different world class extraordinary natural (and man-made creations!) have always caught my interest!
I hope someday to see, with my own eyeballs, some of the sights I have only seen in magazines, or TV shows ..
Todays mission:
1. Where have you been, what have you seen that you thought was cool..
2. Where do you wish to go someday, and what do think you will see/find?
These are always for fun- write as much or as little as you wish!

Gosh I've been so lucky in that I've travelled to some far flung places - Greece, Turkey, Spain, Egypt, Holland, France, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Bali, Australia, Thailand, Italy, Ireland, so I've seen some fantastic sights. I've never travelled West though so I'd love to do that - we have a Carribean Cruise in mind for when I retire. :)

My most distant travels have taken me to Hawaii twice (Oahu & The Big Island) and Aruba. Aruba, to me, was a complete waste but I'd go back to Hawaii again and again because the scenery there never gets old. I could explore an entire island and never have to drive more than 100 miles while seeing everything from snow-capped mountains to lush jungles.

Hmmm ... having spent 5 years in the military, I've been many places, primarily Asian countries. I spent a year in Korea and the thing that struck me there was streets lined with skyscrapers, with "huts" squeezed between them. The contrast was amazing.

In the U.S., I'd like to visit Maine and Alaska. I've been to most states, but not those two! Overseas? Greece has always been an interest of mine, mostly from an historic perspective.

I've been all over the Caribbean, up and down the Eastern Seaboard, to Alaska (Juneau,Sitka,Skagway) San Francisco, Vancouver, Chicago, Boston, Maine, Las Vegas, Flagstaff, Jasper, Scottsdale, Sedona, San Juan, Naples, Capri, Sorrento, Pompeii, Ravello.

I've seen the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, the Golden Gate Bridge, the ruins of Pompeii, an IKEA just outside Naples, Italy, the red rocks of Sedona, Mendenhall Glacier, the entire island of Capri...

I want to go to England, Ireland, France, LA, Seattle...

When I was VERY young (3-5) my family lived in Nice, France in an old lovely villa. (My dad was a captain in the Navy and was stationed there.) We were very close to the actor David Niven, whose adopted daughters were friends with my sister and me. I spoke french like a madwoman (don't remember any of it) and that was cool.
I WANT to go to Ireland so I can drink in pubs all day long and kiss that damn blarney stone.

Ake- I knew you are a world traveler, but I had no idea how far afield you have been!
sornie- Good for you! Hawaii has always sounded more interesting to me than the Caribbean boat trips..
dana- That must have been great! Post something someday about where you have been- I think it would be great!
finn- I had no idea you were so well traveled! Was this a great idea for a post or what!
deb- I too, have a desire to see that part of the world- for the history, and the food!
Vodka mom- I had one year of French, and I still love hearing people speak it.. Ireland would be something to see, wouldn't it?
Marmy- I had no clue how many places you've been! Way more than me... I think folks in your part of the world are more interested in travel than the average American...

Places I've been, I'd llike to go again, especially Kyoto and the Kiyo mizu tera.

Trips I'd like nto make....O)ne flight on Virgin galactic would be cool. See what the marble looks like with my own two eyes.

Buff... I dont think that is cos we are more interested, I think maybe that its because we live on such a small island and Europe is just like a few hours away.... places like France (especially) and spain are just there... and I think in doodleland your the world in yourself....

I do know that I could NOT live more then a spit away from the sea.. I do not know how people can live in the middle of america and not just jump in the car and drive 15-20 minutes and be at the ocean LOL....

ps........ I read it somewhere that, in England, if you stood in the furthest spot away from the sea, you would still only ever be 73 miles away...

I've never been out of the US, so.... so far the coolest thing I've ever seen in the Grand Canyon.

It'll probably never happen, but someday I'd love to go to Ireland. Specifically to see Leap Castle.

buffalodick said...

nyd- To see space from space would be very cool...
marmy- Michigan, being a peninsula has shoreline with 4 of the 5 Great Lakes. Big Water in this state can be reached roughly at the same distance as Great Britain.
Mona- You have traveled quite a bit!
leighann- There still is alot for me to see in USA before I start on the rest of the countries..

I have travelled to quite a few placers not as many as I'd like to have. I don't want to sound cheesey when I say "I started nursing at Notts city hospital on the maternity department. The first baby I saw born into this world was the coolest thing I will ever remember.......

2. Where do you wish to go someday, and what do think you will see/find?

My whole life (well what I remember) I have never been happier than when I'm near the sea. I have always planed the I will live near the sea and shortly I hope these plans will come to fruition. I'm hoping I will find peace and contentment...

I would like to go to Egypt, Greece and France(again)- it would also be cool to go to Norway, Sweden and even further North just to have a looky-look.

I dont know what was cool or will be cool about these places, lame answer but thats all I've got.

I've been many places in the great USA. My favorite was Kauai. They have the "Little Grand Canyon" there and one of the world's longest water falls. The whole island is just beautiful. The don't call it the Garden Island for nothing! I would love to go to the Napali Cost there, but it's only accesible by boat.

I would really like to go to Canada. I've always only heard great things about it. But I would want to visit someone I know and have they take me places. It's so much better to be lead around a strange new place by someone who lives there.

1. I've traveled quite a bit, but my favorite travel memory – the time when I just felt so incredibly alive– was in Wadi Ram, Jordan, of Lawrence of Arabia fame. My husband and I hitched a ride with some Bedouins. It was such an anachronism--riding in the back of their pickup, seeing their kaffiyehs flying in the wind, while our hair blew in our faces and the magnificent rusted landscape blew by. Hours later we drank tea with Beduoins in a tent in the dessert and even saw a wild mamma and baby camel.
2. I want to go Iran. I've always been fascinated by the architecture and the culture. Hopefully in my lifetime, I can do it.

Queenie- sounds like you want to be a homebody for awhile...:)
DogB- Wherever I go, I look for the stuff that tells me about the region, not the tourist traps...
Bina- I think what you'd really like to do is travel and see Beth for awhile!

I've been blessed with parents who traveled a lot, and encouraged me to do the same.

That said, the best places I've been were Morocco (I liked Essaouira and Marrakesh best) Brazil, and the thumb area of Michigan, coast of Lake Huron, the best.

I really want to go to India and I'd like to do a roadtrip across Canada--haven't been to Nunavut!

buffalodick said...

Tavolini- You're young, no kids (yet!) and I think the time to travel is when you have the energy of youth.. of course later you'll have more money but will be limited to wheelchair access places.. :)

I worked, for my (second) ex husband, on the island of Molokai for one month. It is 38 x 10 miles. Ag scientists need 7 years to develip a hybrid, and they cut that time in half by harvesting and immediately replanting in a warmer climate, so they get 2 harvests a year.

I spent 3o days taking helping take down data on corn plants, mucking through fields and wrapping an identifying piece of tape around every.single.stalk. I walked the soles right off my hiking boots in that time.

The island had ONE grocery store at the time, about the size of a convenient mart. It closed at 3:00 Fridays for the weekend, and reopened on Monday mornings. God help you for food if you didn't get your weekend groceries before then. There was one or two tiny shops, no theaters, no bookstores.

It was a beautiful place, about 10 years ago. I hope it's still as isolated and foreign now as it was then.

I was too shy, then, to ask someone how to make poi. If I could do it over now, I'd be eating Hawaiian dinner in the neibhbor's bungalow every night.

DogB- I didn't know all the places you'd been, but I was pretty sure I knew about your perspective!
GNG- What a cool life experience! I still hope to have one that neat before I die...
