Hot, Humid Day... Simple Food Today..

An 84F day may not be hot to alot of you out there, but coupled with high humidity and no breeze in Michigan- that's warm! I baked some blueberry muffins early, with the exhaust fan on over the stove. The cob corn will be simmered for about 7 minutes, and the boneless rib-eye steaks will be done outside on the grill. I am toying with using my new propane grill, but struggle with giving up the flavor of charcoal grilling today! Charcoal wins! It almost always does... Sorry I only have a picture of the muffins, my son was on break from work and we got a little rushed!
Yesterday, we took a ride up north, and gambled a little- lost some, but it wasn't too brutal.. Packed a wrap and a beverage to snarf on the way home. We saw a mom turkey with little ones crossing the road- yes, they made it! Also saw a mom partridge do the same thing 10 miles later! To clarify- they were Ruffled Grouse- we call them "Pats"! That was an unusual sight around here.. Summer traffic has been lighter- gas prices have changed alot of plans for folks..
A phenomenon that has become more widespread than you might think is house buying/owning people renting out rooms. Not landlords, or rental property people- normal people who need extra money to hang on to their house. We know 4 people, including my son, who have renters in their house! This economy has made strange bedfellows quickly! People do what they have to to survive.. I approve.

Simple food is the very best food, isn't it? You can't go wrong, really.

We decided that tonite, we're having what we call a "big-ass dinner salad." Simple, healthy and yummy.

sounds good to me - I was a big fan of the gas grill for many a year but this year I have been using coals and I think I have been converted.

DogB- Welcome to the Congregation Brother! Hallelujah! Baptism in BB-Q sauce is all we need to complete the conversion... :) Saved! Brother Dog is a Saved man! No, I don't use any sauce on a steak, the sauce is just part of the ritual...

Certainly a sign of the financial times indeed.

I made bread very early in the morning on the same principle = beat the heat, but the dough ballooned to fast in the heat and collapsed. what a mess. I'll stick to yeast free for the time being.
Cheers

Your son is a smart man. Do what you have to do to get by. I know this may be a tad dramatic but that is what they did in the depression too.

I had blueberry muffins last week, I saw the blueberrys in ASDA the grocery shop so I thought, well slap my thigh and call me sonia, I'll ave those..... BUT I made them in little paper cases, and all the blueberrys stuck to the paper sides and I had to scrap them off with me teeth LOL..... whats that about?

I still reckon ya cant beat a proper BBQ with charcoal.... I will NEVER go ove to a gas BBQ...

over here for a 'room' one can get $160 a week and thats JUST for the room no food or use of the phone.... it would pay me to lob all me lads out and rent out their rooms LOL... one can also charge $160 a week here and not have to declare it on any tax forms.....

As usual your blob always makes me hungry, just got back from 2 hours torture at the hospital so Im now starving LOL....

Happy Monday..

maddy- I probably observe more of the subtle ways things have gotten worse for people. Technology and cheap, loose credit keeps alot of folks from seeing what is really going on...
har- What is going on right now, is the 21st centurys' version of a Depression..

Marmy- Here we say "Smack my ass and call me Sally", but you Brits.. always the subtle ones.. Renting out rooms in Suburbia over here was never even heard of, until lately!

Wild turkeys Buff how cool is that!

buffalodick said...

rog- Seeing turkeys is common in Michigan nowadays, but the family of pats by the road? That was a sight!

I'm happy when it gets down to 84 :)

Sounds like a good dinner--smart to get the baking done early! We haven't had homemade bread for almost a month because I just can't bring myself to heat up the house even more.

Its the same over here Buff, you do wonder what next!!!!! At least you have some sunshine, it is blumming awful here, rain, rain and more ghastly rain.... Throw us one of those muffins to cheer me up!!!!

the weather sounds good to me since last week we had it here at 106.
Blueberry Muffins make a house smell so good.
We're seeing the effects of the economy the same way here too. I've been seeing more signs here for eggs for sale & veggies that I've never seen before.

If you don't like your weather pass it over here honey! What a washout our summer has been. I've only got two weeks left of my summer break and I'm going rusty with all the rain!

I've never had a blueberry muffin - I want one now after reading what you wrote! :)

Buff, I have so missed your cooking while on the road. Somehow Burker King chicken fries just don't compare!

It's hard. We all have to do what we have to do in order to survive. It is scary though, how hard times have fallen, hmmm?

I'm assuming that the muffins were totally homemade -- not from a boxed mix. Either way, they seem like the perfect treat for late summer. SOrt of our pan of apple crisp from last night. Delish.

I LOVE blueberry muffins, although I remember eating them till I got sick once! :D

& your simple food sounds so 'luxurious' . I love corn on cobs!

Yes inflation is skyrocketing! We went up by about 12.44 % in just two months

I live in "dry heat" country...guess I would wilt if I lived in Michigan with the humidity. Those muffins look good. I made a blueberry pie the other day. Blueberry's are popular right now.

As for the economy...I guess the election will decide one way or the other which way it goes.

Alright listen, it's 4:53 and I can't be listening to words like "steak" and "corn". You just made my commute home that much longer. Grrr.

To make it up to me, you must come over and grill up some rib eyes for me too. Charcoal, plzthx.
