You Vegetarians May Want To Skip This Post.....

A couple of times a year, I buy a whole beef loin, either tenderloin or boneless rib. It usually costs about 70-80 bucks, and comes in a Cryopak in one piece, waiting to be cut into steaks, roasts, or I guess you could cook it whole if you wanted! I usually cut it up myself, trimming away some of the unnecessary fat and silver-skin, to thicknesses usually not seen in the meat case. The savings is only about $15.00, but you get exactly what you want, packaged in quantities that work for you! I bought a pretty good vacuum packer a couple of years ago, and it is simple and fast to use... Vacuum packed products will last longer in the refrigerator or freezer than zip locks or literally any other packaging method. I've seen venison packaged this way last more than a year in the freezer, with no freezer burn! As a borderline hoarder, this suits my idea of being ready in case a mob shows up!

When you see the mob I'll be the guy out front with my fork raised high. (Dinner fork that is...not pitch fork!)

Nice meat you've got there Buff!! *wink*

We've got a vacuum sealer as well - it's great when we buy bulk from Costco. It's been well worth the investment!

DogB- I really should use mine more than I do- works for many things...
Finn- Buying two whole bone-in turkey breasts today- great in the smoker...
jeff- Between my smokers, vacuum packer, and dehydrator, I think you'd have fun here...
rog- really would work for all those fish you catch....

I think that is such a good Idea! meat stored like that can be so handy when you need it during emergency gate crashing in your home! :)

I've always meant to buy a big piece like that..but figured it would only go to waste. But I like the idea of the vacuum sealer.
Peace

Now that's a big chunk of meat! How are you cooking all that?

mona- I don't do it alot, but it is nice when son with unexpected friends drop in...
odat- The uses for a vacuum packer are many... Something primal about a large chunk of meat, isn't there?
claudia- You were warned... hope you made a mess you have to clean up!

Oh my good Lord. That meat looks so good! And yea, I can see that it would be MUCH better to cut it yourself.

I want to visit too!
Sometimes you just crave the red meat.. like RIGHT NOW!
I used to live on a farm and we had our meat straight from the butcher and vacuum sealed like that
There is nothing better

i love meat but can't see large chunks of it. they must be sliced thin with a blindfold.

That looks like a great cut of beef and a great idea of yours. I buy a whole lamb about twice a year from a farm in Wales and it comes all butchered and packaged enough for two.

bina- It's really not that much work, but the place we buy the meat is a bit of a drive...
jen- we cut the whole thing into smaller, usable pieces, and most will be done on the charcoal grill!
InsaneM- I agree. When my boys were growing up, I would buy a quarter or a half cow from a customer who raised hormone free beef. What a difference!
Tanya- You are the second vegetarian who disregarded my warning!
Ake- I want to do a whole lamb or kid goat on my smoker grill some day...
