Cole Slaw In an Oriental Flavor.. For A Mob!

Today, we are going to my niece's house to attend an outdoor retirement party for her dad. They are expecting about 120 people, so everybody pray for good weather! We were asked to bring a Cole slaw we make that has a distinct Far East flavor print to it. Others have been asked to bring salads, so I only made enough for about 30-40 servings. This stuff is tasty, and compared to most food I eat- fairly healthy! Recipe as follows:
3 head of white cabbage, cored, shredded finely
1 " " of red " " " "
10 medium carrots peeled, cut into small pieces
6 stalks of celery, cut into small pieces
4 cans of sliced water chestnuts, drained well!
1lb. of pea pods, julienned
4 bunches of green onions (about 20-24) chopped (I use only onion end cut at 5"long)
2 cans Mandarin orange slices, drained well!
Mix all that thoroughly, set aside and make dressing

Dressing:
3 jars of Marzetti original Cole slaw dressing
3oz. of soy sauce
2oz. red pepper (or regular) rice vinegar
1/2 oz. sesame oil
2oz. honey
1oz crushed garlic
Season to taste with following: white pepper, celery seed, chinese five spice, and sesame seeds.
You may blend this together and put on salad immediately- then refrigerate, or refrigerate separately and mix just before serving. It is a thin dressing, so stir, toss, remix before serving. The picture only shows one big bowl- we made two of those!
Most of the folks attending are kind of rural, so I hope they try it before I have to tell them what's in it- 'cause if I do, they won't try it for sure!
Hope you are all enjoying your week-ends!

DogB- I thought I'd see if I could make something without meat in it! I actually am starting to eat cole slaw- if it's good stuff...
Mona- We had a green bell pepper, and debated if we should use it or not!
odat- I made way too much! I also forgot to put the sliced almonds in it...

Buff, this sounds really good. I love cole slaw, but I'm really particular about it...only my aunt's cole slaw will do. But I think I would give this a try!!

ake- Weather was beautiful, then windy rainy, then nice again in the span of 3 hrs.!
Snowniece- I think there was enough food left over to feed a crew of pirates! We brought home about 8lbs. of cole slaw! Gave it away this morning to friends and neighbors!
beth- The only ingredient that isn't working is the mandarin oranges- canned are too mushy and sweet!

Am I the ONLY one who hates coleslaw. I do Buf, I really do. It makes me shudder. American OR Oriental. Bad Buf, yucky, yucky!

Oh sorry Buff I would have to pass, although it is a healthy food and I should have it, not a rabbit.

My God that sounds good, but holy crap, if I made THAT much it would just go to waste. I would have to make a much smaller amount.

claudia- Boy! Like maybe once a year I mention a vegetable dish, and somebody gives me grief....
rog- My wife fed the leftover veggie scraps to the bunnies who live around here!
bina- You can cut the quantities of ingredients down by a divisible number and have a smaller batch!

Oh Buff, I could tell you some stories about me and pryo time. Nothing PURPOSELY I've done, but like when I was burning a bunch of left over wood and twigs and crap, and everything looked fine, so I went to take a shower, came back out and the fire was to the dog pen, the pond, and ALMOST my house! Yea, my son and I were out there (I was in my night shirt) with hose, leaf blower and rakes because there was NO way I was calling the fire department and getting laughed at!!!!!
