Any Other Parts Of The Country Have A "Wet Burrito"?

For over thirty years, Grand Rapids, MI has had a creation that is on almost any bar menu in town- The Wet Burrito! It started with a small restaurant called the Beltline Bar in about 1973. It was a tortilla (soft) filled with spiced ground beef, shredded lettuce, chopped tomato, with refried beans(optional). It was then wrapped shut, covered in an enchilada sauce, then covered in shredded colby cheese and heated until ingredients hot and the cheese melted. Sides of tortilla chips, sour cream, chopped onion, hot sauce, or sliced Jalepeno peppers were the norm. This phenom swept the metro area, and within 20+ miles of G.R. you could have a "wet burrito" just about anywhere that had a liquor license! I have noticed that the national chains (Taco Bell, Chilis, etc.) really don't have this on their menus, so I wondered if we were the only region in U.S. that has such a creation on the menu? I'm making my version of a wet burrito tonight for dinner, so I'll include a picture as to what it sorta should look like! Let me know if you have ever heard of such a thing in your stompin' grounds, and also feel free to mention any food you might think is only found around your neck of the woods!

I am not sure if it is exactly like that but we have many similar versions. I just can't tolerate those peppers.

It's funny because we had soft home made tacos tonight with beef, sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, three cheeses and some had sour cream. Ate them outside on the deck. Something so simple was delicious.

hmmm, I wonder if I can find all of those ingredients around North Wales. I might just have a go at making myself one of them.

If the tortilla is corn, it's pretty much an enchilada... if not, it's a cross between a burrito or chimichanga and a enchilada.

har- The base wet burrito is not that hot/spicy!
gnightgirl- The original restaurant is 4 times bigger than when it started, and still makes one of the best in town!
odat- It's that layer of melted cheese I've not seen in other parts of the country...
DogB- It really is tasty!
DutchBabe- That's what you get for booting the Spaniards out of the Netherlands way back when...
UrbanV- I know you could make this into a vegan version, no problem!
Casdok- That seems to be what everyone is telling me...
Pink- What don't you like? You are the thinnest big eater I've ever met!
meredic- I bet you'd be the first on your block to have one!

after doing "extensive" research I have concluded that this is a normal burrito that is smothered in cheese and sauce, I never knew it was called "wet" though...still cracks me up and yes I have had them....

Finn- Chimis are fried around here, and it is a flour tortilla. DogB- That is pretty much what it is, alright!

I've never had one, but I'm willing to try, any left?

Sounds delicious.

Maybe it's just me, but there's something unappealing about the name "wet burrito."

I live on the Mexican border, and if there is any concoction involving tortillas, ground beef and beans ... we have it here. I just have never heard it called a "wet burrito".

Jen- As long as you like melted cheese, you'll love 'em!
Eve- Agreed on name, but after 30+ years you get used to it!
Beth- A private club I belong to has 2 "Burrito Nites" a year. We will sell over 350+ wet burritos in about two hours!
Ake- Three of the photos didn't load- they look about the same anyway...
Paul- I'm sure you do! It got that name because it's not a dry burrito- which is what we call a normal burrito around here!

I think for paul champagnes sake we must accept that this is LINGO...like "whiskey down" for rye toast...thats what I keep telling myself ......

typically in a more spanish area this might be called "con puesta"
