My Son's Birthday Meal- Coooked And Catered By Moi!
For years, we would take our sons out on their birthday, to any restaurant they wanted.. Lately we changed that tradition to having a meal at my house- anything they wanted! My youngest, Craig (aka CraigO, CraigoEggo, CODY-Craig Owen DeYoung!)Loves to eat, and picked out the following menu;
1. Appetizer.. Italian sausage stuffed mushrooms with smoked Provolone cheese.
2. Fresh asparagus, steamed.
3. Roasted redskin potatoes, with gravy.
4. Thick, top round roast- done as a pot roast for 3-1/2 hrs.
5. Sourdough bread, butter or honey on top.
6. Caramel-cinnamon apple crisp, with vanilla bean ice cream.
All came out as planned, with no missteps! His girlfriend was in attendance, and enjoyed what he did!
He loves our Airedale, Clara, and was putting her out to do what dogs do, spied a large, white object by the side of our house... He comes back in and says "Look what I found!" It was a moisture-laden Puffball mushroom, perfectly sized for slicing and eating soon! Hope you enjoy the photos, and figure out which is which!
We suspend serious talks when celebrating birthdays around here, as it is guaranteed to ruin a good time on a day when I believe you should celebrate your life!
A good week-end is what I wish to all of you!
P.S.- Wish you were here DogB- I know your love of mushrooms from the wilderness! Your home made beer, my shrooms.. what a great feast! All girls and boys who visit are welcome too!

The sky's the limit when requesting birthday dishes at your house! It all looks incredible. :)
Are you coming to my house to cook birthday dinner? It's at the end of October, so you have time to plan. No? Thought not. Looks great anyway!
Happy Birthday to CraigO
That meal looks perfect!
I can think of nothing, absolutely NOTHING, I want more than your son's birthday meal right now. My asapargus always comes out soggy and I know you make it "to die for" (don't ask me how I know, I just do!). Also, who doesn't loved stuffed mushrooms...with sausage and smoked cheese?? OMG! :)~
It never fails. You make my mouth water whenever I visit you!
nice birthday grinds! he chose well...and that puff ball - send'er here!
Birthdays at home are much nicer than a restaurant. Plus, you can have a few drinks without worrying about the inflated liquor bill.
I have had apple crisp on my mind now for a few days now!! Yummy
HAPPY BIRTHDAY CRAIG!!! Family time together is a priceless birthday gift.
Even though you spelled provolone wrong, it all looks so tasty!
BlueV- He went easy on me! I would have ordered lobster..
Marjie- I think someone cooking for you is as rare as someone cooking for me!
Mona- Thanks! He enjoyed...
Scarlet- The mushrooms were great, asparagus was crisp, dessert was a direct hit, pot roast and potatoes were really good, too! Look for light green, small diameter asparagus that is crisp, and steam it no longer than six minutes- should be great!
DogB- Weighed about a pound! Full of moisture- gonna get snarfed tomorrow!
Hit40- My apple crisp is out of an old church cook-book, with a few of my own tweaks(cinnamon & caramel!)
Mr. C- Oops, my bad! Spell check was off...
The church ladies did not have cinnamon? What kind of cult church was this??
LMAO to your comment back on Sharing the Insanity!!! I thought I was losing it trying to bounce back to her blog. And, she did not have an email on her comment.
Hit40- My bosom bud(although you tell me otherwise!) I cannot abide people who want contact but make it impossible to do so... Congregationalists (UCC) way better than the Reformed Church I grew up in, when it comes to rules! Reformed- "Where have you been for two weeks!!??" Congo's- "Haven't seen you for a couple of weeks- glad you're here!" God is good, he's just a little disinterested in humans...
Hit40- Those additions made this a top five winner in the State BB-Q cook-off twice... Let that sink in, and Email mail me for the recipe... Love to talk with you! You simply rock!
Oh such a tasty looking birthday feast. Where's the birthday cake and the candles?
What a great idea! Your son's a lucky guys. I'd love you to cook me a birthday meal, pity I live so far away! :(
Much better than waiting in line at the outback!!
Next to Morels, Puffballs are my favorite wild Michigan mushroom.
Happy B'Day to Sonny-Boy....G
KB- He wanted apple crisp! I guess I could have stuck a candle in it...
Ake- I would, you know..but were getting to that age where that many candles would need a pretty big cake! :)
G-man- We used to find a handful of morels every spring in our back yard- but haven't seen any in a couple of years. Then we started finding a puffball or two in late summer!
Happy Bday Craig!
So those mushrooms, do you make a stuffing mixture with cooked italian sausage or is it simply cooked sausage? Sounds great either way.
Chris- Hot Italian sausage, crumbled and fried with chopped sweet onion, drained. Mixed in breadcrumbs, blended with grated Parmesan cheese. Stuffed mushroom with mix, and topped with a piece of smoked Provolone cheese... baked a 340F for 1/2 hour, or until cheese melts.. Simple and fast!
Home made beer and shrooms!!!
Gene- Hope all went well with your participation.. May all Americans never forget their rights, and never give them up! Our Constitution Rules! Keep bitchin', as it is soon to be the only weapon the gov'ment will allow!
I never thought I would see the word buffalodick on my blog! hehe! Thanks so much for your kind words. It means more than you know.
I am going to start following your blog. You crack me up! You're my kind of people. Good heart and don't take yourself too seriously. And your cooking is amazing. My husband loves cooking, is BBQ freak and does all kinds of stuff with the smoker too. He's known among our friends for his smoked brisket! I showed him some of your masterpieces and I am pretty sure he got a culinary boner.
My birthday is in December. I'll get a menu out to you soon of what I want ;)
My b-day is in December too!! what a fun family you have.
Rachel- Welcome to the blog! Got my name from chili contests- used to use Buffalo in it, and my name is Richard- I think you get it! In the last ten years, I've taken a third, and a fourth with beef brisket in the KCBS State cook-off... Sounds like your husband can cook pretty good too!
Deb- Not always, but we try to get along, and have a few laughs!
You can tell that he has had a good cooking dad, as he picked a great menue!
Anette- He's turning into a pretty fair cook himself! Everything he picked are family favorites!
Happy Birthday Craig! And it looks like you raised him right: the menu he chose is fantastic! What great taste!
Jamie- Even though both my sons are adults, you never stop being a caring parent... Just dropped off a meal for him where he works on week-ends, a Sunday tradition we've done for 10+ years.. next post will include chicken mini Cordon Bleu, and that Puffball mushroom, as an open face breadless sandwich!
Good food with family and good conversation....can't ask for more than that! Love the menu!
J.J.- Welcome to the blog! It's all pretty tame here, even with the name Buffalo Dick! Come back anytime, please! I'll scoot over and see what you write about!
Can you come and cook something for my birthday? lol
HAPPY BIRTHDAY YOUNG CRAIG....
