Stale Pitas, And Father's Day Dinner & After
Saturday, I finished up my jerky, which came out tasty! We grocery shopped, and did a few other errands... Bought some pita pocket bread with the intent of continuing my cold sandwich craving with a new twist! I planned to make a couple of pita pocket sandwiches filled with lettuce, tomato slices, mayo, smoked turkey breast, and Swiss cheese... the pitas became two pieces of unleaven bread, with ingredients between.. It tasted OK, but are you supposed to heat these up first, or were my pitas just plain stale? I'm going to make pizzas out of the two left...
The Father's day feast went way better! Marinated small fillet minions for grilling over charcoal, sauteed mushrooms, sweet corn, sour dough bread, and scallops sauteed in garlic butter.. I crushed the garlic, which is something I normally don't do, scooted it around in the butter for a bit, then removed... Everything came out on time and was good! Nobody wanted dessert(cheesecake) everyone too full. Typical Father's Day.. I cook they eat, one son in K.C. called, other was here eating- forgot to bring the card he bought. No gift yet, but all I want is another rib rack- and I don't need it until the 4th of July! I apologize for only one photo, as we were on the food like jackals...
After dinner, my wife and I went for a ride down by the Grand River, which had flooded upstream and cancelled a big outdoor free concert of country music in Ionia, MI.. They were at capacity crowd, when they announced it was cancelled.. I almost drove over there to see that many pissed off red necks! Anyway I threw in a couple of photos of our mighty river... Have a good week everyone!

you are supposed to warm up the pitas - it makes them more pliable - the same way you would warm up a tortilla -tell me you warm up tortillas rather than using them right from the package....
DogB- I do. I kinda thought that after the fact, but seriously- it is the first time I ever tried it..
Hope you had a great Father's Day. You certainly ate well... but you usually do!
Happy Fathers Day Buff.
x
Hi Unclebuf!!
I don't like the store bought pitas that much. Usually I make breakfast pitas with sausage, eggs, and cheese in them. I think homemade ones would be much tastier.
Glad you had a a Happy Father's day!

Shame your filled pittas didn't turn out the way you wanted but next time they will - when you warm them up! :)
Your dinner sounds so good! And how funny is it that you cook for Father's Day? I bet no one else can cook as good as you can though, huh?
And I have no idea about Pita bread. Never had it, never bought it. I'm a simple girl, or maybe just boring! LOL
Happy Father's Day!!
I like the flat bread better than
pitas, if we're going store bought. I had a great time in Michigan, even talked my friend from Algonac into coming down and running the Atlanta Half Marathon with me this fall. She ran the Grand Rapids 25K last year--didn't you run that at some point?
Hope you Father's Day was excellent :)
Baaah--not Algonac, she lives in Allegan. Over on your side of the state :)
Always toast or warm pitas. It restores it. If you like old school flavors, trying put them directly onto your gas stove and roast open flame style using a tongs. now you are cooking a like proof with grill marks ta boot. Kangaroo pitas work the best, IMHO.
Thanks, Finn! It was another one for the books...
Belle- Thanks! New icon, I see..
Snowniece- I share my screw-ups along with my successes!
Ake- I was in a hurry and didn't stop to think!
Bina- It is just easier for me to cook for the mob.. That was the first time I ever bought them, and I'm not boring and neither are you!
Tavolini- Flat bread sounds better.. Yeah, when I was your age I ran it in 79(1hr 59min)and in 81(2hrs 4 minutes) injured playing softball in 80- would have been my best year!
A.E.B.- Welcome to the blog! Thanks for the info!
Interesting how we get in the mood for certain foods.
... I made a gross brownie/cookie thing today that I saw on a blog that is made with 2 store mixes. I should have known better. No good comes from a box mix. My kids ate it. YUCK!!!
The 4th of July is less than two weeks away - I hope that rib rack shows up soon!
Yep, you're supposed to warm them up. Your pitas sound like a great sandwich for the hot days we've been having. Glad you had a wonderful Father's Day. Filet Mignons sound right on time!
Hit40- Tonight was a leftover rare fillet migon sliced and thrown in with red bell pepper strips, onion strips, and a sauce for Fajitas! Good thing I found two tortilla for wrapping-AFTER WARMED, EVERYBODY!!! Sheez...
Dana- Went tonight to pick one up a BB-Q Specialty store, and they were out! Idiots....
Katherine- The Pasta Salad For A Guy is what I just got done making.. Good for hot weather too! I'll post about it in a couple of days..
I used to think all pitas were stale tasting/feeling, but when I told my boss about it (Pakistani, it's a huge part of their diet) he mentioned that it's one of the few things he buys at Walmart around here, because that's the only place that seems to really stock for the ethnic populations that people shop at frequently, so the turn over is faster and you get fresher product. Just a suggestion.
Hope your Father's day was great!
The food sounds yummy.
Happy belated Fathers Day to you. I am loving the pictures of your river!!
Kate- I think it was a combo of stale and not warmed before using...
K- A nice day for sure, doing what a dad should do- make the dinner!
Donna- Actually kind of bad shots of it... We have a Fall salmon/steelhead run up the river- you can walk down from your hotel right into the river and catch big fish! Thr river starts roughly at Jackson, MI and goes west through the state, emptying into Lake Michigan..
PS If you pop by my place tomorrow you'll find a little something for you. x
That happened to me the last time I used them, and I warmed mine up, but even in the photo you could tell it was dry and crumbly?
Like the water photos, and hope your fathers day was a good one...I am paying respects to my parents this coming weekend with a trip to Mineral Wells, Texas...
I LOVE pita pockets stuffed with anything.....
Happy belated fathers day dear you...... sorry I aint been around....
x
Ake- You're scaring me....
ChefE- The boys grandfathers are both gone now, so I guess I'm the Dad...
Marmy- I'm sure you had a good reason.. Hope everything is healing up nicely!
Cute duckies.
KB- They love it when the river is up over it's normal level. It loosens food they can get easily, which is why they are all close to the bank, or on it!
Looks like you had a wonderful Father's Day to me.
