2009 BB-Q Contest...
Well, Let me start by saying we could have had a better year.. We didn't screw up any of the 8 dishes we prepared, but really didn't place very high, either. Beans- low. Dessert- in the top third of the pack. Veggies- about the same.. Potatoes- in top ten. Chicken, Ribs in top half of field. Beef Brisket and Pulled Pork scored low.. The span between team scores seems to get tighter every year... Some of our friends, and people we have competed with over the years, didn't score very high either.. Sorry, no pictures of food- we get hectic at turn-in time! A few photos of various teams and some of our team and family.. First two were our BB-Q "neighbors" that day.. Dragon Spit Team, Missing Mike's daughter Sam, my sister and her husband, etc.. The last photo was a mistake- and I'm too tired to take it off the blog!
I definitely am whipped afterwards- and don't much feel like cooking today!

Sorry you didn't score well Buff but I like the photos! :)
Ake- I have to cheat or bribe judges better...
The judges must have been smoking crack!
Oh well, looks like it was probably a DAMN GOOD TIME, anyway !
Mr.C- Judges were brutal.. whatta are you gonna do..
Hef- You would have fit right in! Donna is welcome too!
Scrotum sack fiddling is NOT allowed with the judges to get higher marks? dam, and I thought you could do anything in america LOL
Sorry you sound well disappointed, but just look at all your loverly friends and family you got to spend time with... thats high on anyones score sheet......
Sod cooking after all that, treat your selves to a chinky take-away....
x
Marmy- I don't do scrotums! You come over and "handle" that! Wife went to wedding shower today, I don't think food is going to happen..
I respect anyone with the intestinal fortitude to enter the fray of a contest.
As far as being judged, I've heard a lot about the shifting paradigm of judges preferences over the past few years. Teams that used to consistently place high are losing out to sweeter Q. Of course that preference is not supposed to play into scoring (whether you like spicy, sweet or hot, etc) from what I understand.
But then again, judging is subjective.
Aww, so sorry Buff. Next time, we'll all come over and cheer you on.
In a competition some win some lose...But I am sure your food was at par with anyone else's.
Great pictures!
I think its wonderful that you did well in some areas. Obviously you are a fantastic cook and to even enter these challenges, competitions shows you have talent!!
Scrotum masssgae works every time, btw.hahaha Call me next time .. I can be of big help with those judges..;)
It was fun though.. Right Buff?
Chris- I am certified as a KCBS judge, and I watched first hand what could and does happen! We have a lot of local judges that don't cook much, and don't judge any other contests. We tried to lightnen our sauces this year, and also went to a vaccum packer for rub/marinate mix- seemed to work, but next year more spices!
KB- Thanks! We have a number of friends and relatives come by- mainly to mooch some free BB-Q!
Mona- We can always do a little better, but there was nothing we were ashamed of to give to the judges...
Donna- Well, if I thought that massage would help, I'd invite you for sure!
G-man- We had some good moments, but it is more work than you would think!
hey, mistakes happen. and DON"T cook!!!! Let someone cook for YOU for a change! XOXOXOX
Beth, if I don't cook we don't eat! The only thing my wife can make is reservations at the restaurant...
Looks like fun anyway. Too bad you couldn't snag a prize with the fun. Bet you were glad to put your feet up Sunday!
Margie- I'm getting too old for this stuff... Feet up Sunday? I would have put my body in traction, if I had the equipment! It's not easy being me....
Thanks for the pictures! Always good.
Gene- Love the people I know, and share as best I can..
How could YOU not have scored well??
They would've thrown tomatoes at me if I'd have participated...but then I know better than to enter a bbq contest.
Sounds like your dessert was a hit; wonder what it was.
I think we *may* have found an apartment... and B's favorite thing about it is the huge courtyard for grillin'. :-)
Bummer about your score, but for what it's worth, I'd eat any BBQ you care to make....
Very fun!!! I am excited if I just whip out a batch of cookies in one day. My big cooking days are in the fall. Excellent turkey at my house!
... my mixer is an old sunbeam. Sad looking antique. The funky green mixer gets the job done. It is about 20 years old.
If you opened a BBQ restaurant- I would be first in line to help and eat! No pic of that good food on the grill?
Scarlet- Dessert was an almond flavored white cheescake, on a chocolate graham cracker crust, drizzed with caramel...
Lilu- Mankind must have a charcoal grill and must use it- it's very primal!
Jeanne- It was very edible! Unfortunately, so was everyone else's....
Hit40- I have a wand mixer/blender, 25yr. old electric hand mixer, a gigantic food processor, and the big bowl/stand mixer... My favorite is still my Harvest gold colored electric hand mixer..
Chef- I need a $10,000 trailer BB-Q smoker, with a giant tray electric rotisserie, thermocouples that check tempurature of grill at 4 points to compete on a level playing field with these guys!
Ah, well--you can't win everything. Sounds like you have some plans for next year. It DOES look like a fun time, though :)
Tavolini- Being a slow learner, I start talking about next year's plan one day later...
OMG, does that sound good...that dessert! Wow!
