Do you know the difference between a Recession and a Depression? A recession is where your neighbor loses their job. A depression is when you lose yours....
My wife came home yesterday, and informed me her company was letting 10-20 people go-and she was one of them. It was not a performance issue, they simply had to cut staff. She will recieve a severance package, her vacation pay, and unemployment(Uncontested). We are fine with this, as we are not head over heels in debt, but it illustrates the state of the economy in Mich. I am tired of watching good people who really do need a job in West Michigan lose their jobs to inexpensive labor driven industries overseas- primarily China.
My wife is one of those individuals that works more for her self- worth than the money, and I know in the next few weeks a depression will hit her that we all will feel. With her work experience I know she will find another job about as fast as she will want to, but it is still a sucky feeling to be out of work and not have it been by your choice.

That sucks. I'm glad you're in an okay position to deal with it financially, but I understand what she'll be going through.
Sending good thoughts her way...
That does suck! Hopefully your wife pulls through okay.
Wow. I am surprised. We just had lunch on Monday together. I know she didn't see that coming. We are right where you two are at right now as Craig lost his job about two weeks ago. Hang in there. I will give her a call.
That does suck! I hope she takes advantage of the free time though and does some fun things before going to her next job adventure.
I am sorry to hear this bad news...good luck
That is indded sad. I hope your wife finds a better employment soon. Surely that sucks indeed, to be on the reciving end thus, without any reason.I can empathise with her.
i'm so sorry! that is terrible. i, too, am surrounded by layoffs and buyouts. best of luck.
To all- Thank you for your kind comments. It's a rare individual today that doesn't have this happen to them. Like I said, we're fine and nothing will change in our life except for the better! We are to an age where even bad news is more exciting than a boring routine!
i'm sorry about your wife and her job. we are definitely shifting gears in america. we'll have to come up with another way to live i think.
but in the meantime, come to california; you guys can stay with me until you get jobs ghere! yay!
Sorry to hear that. And people wonder why I hold on to my non-glamorous government job.... Being out in the private sector is a scary thing.
I'm so sorry to hear this. I hope your wife is OK...
And it is a symptom of a larger problem...I hope something is being done to address it. If not, you can always move to Philly!
Tanya- Thank you for your kind offer! I don't know if me wandering around in California wearing my Wolverine Maize&Blue would fly with your neighbors!
Michelle- Can't blame you for your feelings about the private sector, but it really is what made America great!
Urban V- Used to have a few friends in the steel business over that way. Took me out one night to a Mafia frequented restaurant where I had the best Italian food I have ever had! Saw Boathouse Row with the Christmas lights on too!
Once you get past the difference in accent(Midwest English spoken here!), really warm and great people!
That's terrible! Hopefully she will find something soon, something better even...
Eve- Don't worry about a thing, all is well. I'm a sensible guy who simply worries about all you fruitcake women! You go cry when what you should do is kick someone in the ba*ls! I kid you not, tomorrow is her last day, and she was worried about how she did for them training her replacements(plural!)!!Put me in a wig and a fake pair of ta-tas, and tomorrow would be a day of ass kicking they would all remember!
Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that.
And now for the ironic portion...
We were JUST talking about the economic decline in Michigan in Economics yesterday and how hard it must be for so many people to be out of work.
I'm glad your wife will bounce back a-ok, but the whole "starting over" process is just such a Process.
Good luck and hugs!

p.s. And I am SO ROFL about you in a wig and Ta-tas! :)
amen to that! It sucks that we are losing all of our jobs. I live in Ohio in a depressed area....GM maybe pulling out, Delphi outsourcing....people moving away. It IS depressing.
I hope your wife finds another job she loves that will love her back.
Sheesh! That sucks, babe... I'm so sorry... I am crossing my fingers she'll find an even greater job soon!
